Subject: FYI about me

Silly me! I forgot to put any personal info on my survey.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I had 6 different infections going on with a sugar level about 400. It was a shocker for me to find out I had diabetes. There was no instruction given to me while I was in the hospital about diet, recipes, etc. All I was shown was how to give myself a shot if my sugar went over 150. I was on shots for about 2-3 weeks, then I was able to get my sugar under control. But I had no idea about all the other things related to this disease.

At first, I felt pretty sorry for myself. I have friends with diabetes so I knew a little about all the don'ts. I enjoy food & I felt so deprived.

After about 4 months of trial & error, I was able to get into a diabetic clinic for an 8-hr. crash course. I learned so much there about how the body functions, what happens with sugar, etc.

Here are a couple of things I learned that are important to me:
...my main goal is to keep my sugar counts LEVEL - it is the spiking up or down that causes the troubles
...our bodies do not know the difference between glucose, sucrose, lactose or fructose - it is all sugar to our bodies
...I consider it a challenge to find the best foods with the lowest carb counts (I am on a low-carb diet)
...I know it is all symantics, but I am a person with diabetes, not a diabetic
...sugar-free foods have come such a long ways & some of them actually taste good! *wink*

I really need to do more about exercise. Any ideas for kimono arms? *wink*

My DIL recently found out that 2 of her brothers were diagnosed with diabetes. Their counts were 800 & 900!! One went into diabetic shock & the other just didn't feel well. They eat what they want then take their insulin shots to bring down the sugar level. They do not realize how damaging the spiking is.

Those of us who craft, sew, scrapbook, paint, etc., are creative & enjoy a challenge now & then. Let's be creative & take control of diabetes so we do not become a slave to the disease.

(((hugs)))
