Suspect tried to flee from police

A Newbern Police officer was knocked to the ground by murder suspect Colton Whitelow as Whitelow attempted to flee from custody on Thursday.

Colton Dequan Whitelow, 18, 366 Cherry Dale, Halls, is lodged in the Dyer County Jail without bond. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and evading arrest.

Whitelow turned himself after hours of negotiations, said Newbern Police Department investigator Greg Barr.

"The talk started soon after the events of Wednesday night and he became a suspect," said Barr. "It went on until he turned himself in. But then he had a change of mind, evidently."

After investigators finished questioning Whitelow about the Wednesday night shooting death of Tamara Brown, 20, he was handcuffed and placed in leg shackles for transport to the jail.

According to the report, officer Bill Altgibers was escorting Whitelow from the department to the patrol car when Whitelow struck Altgibers and knocked him to the ground.

Whitelow, whose movement was hampered by the handcuffs and shackles, was caught in seconds.

These boys like to act big and bad, that is until the gun points at them. Fry 'em stick 'em lets make examples not inmates. Not for vengance for that belongs to god, but for the safety of the rest of the ones who live on.

Colton Dequan Whitelow, you are charged with Murder. I suggest you humble yourself from here on out and pray to God you are spared from execution. Thank goodness there is a God and he can forgive you. I doubt (understandbly so) that Tamara's parents,family and friends will ever forgive you and the other two thugs for what you have done!
