Subject: Race Around the World

I thought the Mammoth Car race was long and arduous, but the World Grand Prix Race is 25,000 miles around the globe, from Los Angeles to Tokyo! Mr Goldminter, the richest man in the world, is offering a prize of gold, as well as his own daughter Lovelace, who will marry the winner. Of course she doesn’t wish to be a race prize, and disguises herself as boy to enter the race and disrupt it.

The race begins with 200 entrants, each followed from above by a helicopter pit crew. Here are some of the memorable moments.

The start of the race with the road filled with cars and the sky filled with helicopters overhead. Speed and Sparky are in car number 5, with Pops and Trixie as their flying pit crew. Lovelace and her partner Oscar are in car number 1.

The race proceeds across the United States until reaching Miami, where the racers abandon their cars for speedboats. Lovelace’s boat runs into trouble, and she and Oscar wind up in the ocean waters.

The ever resourceful Speed brandishes a knife and fights off a hungry shark, saving Lovelace and Oscar.

“Oh I’m beat, and I don’t even belong to that generation.”

The race moves to the mighty Amazon River, where alligators are one of the many dangers the racers face.

The racers turn in their boats for propeller airplanes. Greed Scrounge in number 4 knocks Speed’s plane out of the sky.

The next sequence sees the racers traveling by submarine and arriving at the South Pole. Snow trackers are the mode of travel for that climate, and Speed once again rescues Lovelace.

The racers are back on wheels again for Africa’s Sahara desert, albeit jeep wheels.

Lovelace finally sees that she is wrong to try to disrupt the race, and rescues Speed when he gets into dire straits during the motorcycle segment of the race.

In Russia the race reverts back to race cars, and Speed and Sparky have an encounter with Racer X. He lectures Speed for the mistakes he has made, but still lends a hand so Speed and Sparky can complete the competition.

The final seconds of the race, with Lovelace and Speed racing for the finish line.

Speed has participated in the ultimate challenge and has risen the top of the racing world.

The episode has a feeling of closure to it, like it is the end of the series. And while the narrator beckons us to return for the next adventure of Speed Racer, this did indeed mark the final episode of the original series.

In the end of part 2, where Speed tells Sparky there are more races to be won; you can hear a 50 sec excerpt of the Japanese main title theme (edited down). It starts off with the wild drum solo and then kicks into the jazzy theme and you see Speed driving to Stonehenge and Acropolis in Greece. He banks the car up a steep hill that is reminiscent of Mount Lycabettus and you see an ancient temple rise up as the sun is setting. The end of the series, but just the beginning for Speed's continuing adventures.
