Subject: The Supersonic Car

Speed Racer is the driver testing a new supersonic rocket car capable of breaking the sound barrier. Favorite moments include:

The opening sequence with Speed Racer in the cockpit of the supersonic car designed by Pops Racer for the Vavoom Motor Company. Pops conducts the countdown and the car takes off across the Saline Flats testing site.

As Speed Racer approaches mach one the rear section of the car begins to crack. The supersonic car crashes, injuring Speed.

An investigation reveals sabotage, but it is covered up by Mr Blagget, a thug hired by Mr Tycootis, the head of a competing car company.

The Vavoom Motor company blames Speed for the crash of the supersonic car. They decide to build a second supersonic car, and take applications for test drivers. Speed Racer applies, and easily wins. Many of the tests resemble astronaut training.

Speed and Pops are talking near a graveyard when they are attacked by a group of armed men.

Supersonic car #2 is tested, with Speed again behind the wheel. The car once again cracks up and is destroyed.

Pops works on a third supersonic car, and this time guards are placed around it before the race. However, it turns out that the track itself has been sabotaged.

Speed successfully completes the test in supersonic car #3, breaking a new speed record for good measure.

Mr. Tycootis and Mr. Ferno went too far and Speed got Blagget at the end. The hit men in the cemetery couldn't have picked a better place to try to kill Speed and Pops. Luckily, the police were alerted and they made it out. The comic part of the story is when Spritle and Chim Chim secretly board the Supersonic Car's exhaust shaft and gain access to the cockpit to warn Speed of the time bomb Ferno planted on the test grounds. A different kind of story and a good one.
