Kids have ate up Speed Racer at the movies, but parents seem to dislike bringing them to a film based on an old cartoon that they prolly didn't like all that well. I myself would have taken my kids, (if I had any) several times to see it. I enjoyed an know they would too. Critics loved "family" movies like Chronicles of Narnia and the like. I think Speed racer will destroyed internationally as well on DVD so I am not worried.

Hi Jason,

Welcome and thanks for signing my guestbook. Yes, the film was a failure. It couldn't make back the $120 million they put into it. As far as a good story to enjoy, that's one thing. How the public sees it is another.

The little kids are the target audience. I mean, if you compare the childern of the 60's and 70's to the next generation of kids that are younger than we are, it's a substantial difference. I wouldn't think a 2008 film would be well regarded, where it could have been more in 1993. Back then, the original Speed Racer was revived on MTV and Cartoon Network. That was the right time.

It will be interesting to see if the new series on Nicktoons will be given a green light for a 2nd season or cancel it later this year. I don't watch network cable anymore nor go to movie theaters. I had my day. My home theater systems do great.

If you notice their strategy, the airtime I think is 7 pm, which is dinnertime for the kids at home. But there's so many other things on TV, they may not even bother with it. If it works, it could last for a few years at best. Ironically, the original Speed Racer is nowhere to be seen on the TV lineup.

Looking back, I am very grateful to have grown up with Speed as a child and blossom into adulthood. I loved independent TV stations. The variety of programming. I watched them more often than major networks.

This site I loved creating and those who have it bookmarked are blessed. It was time. See you back here again!

Rick
