I found that the trick to getting a useable pattern is the print settings. I just printed a full size pattern of an oval mirror frame (1/4 of it) and traced it to cut out the piece.

a couple of comments from sketchup help forum:

It's all in the Print or Print Preview dialog boxes. Uncheck Fit to
page and Use model extents. Set the Scale so 1 inch in the Printout
equals 1 inch in SketchUp.

Tim uses those templates frequently and they are quite handy. I use
them some. I've also made labels for things using that method. For
more on that check out Tim's posts in our blog called Design. Click.
Build. on the fine woodworking site.

Before entering the Print (or Print Preview) dialog, make sure that
you set the Camera mode to 'Parallel Projection,' NOT 'Perspective'.
Also ensure that one of the 'Standard' camera views is displayed (Top,
Bottom, Left, etc.) Without the correct Camera settings, SketchUp
either can't print-to-scale, or dimensions won't be quite right.
