Press Release Tuesday, August 27, 2002

PICHI ENDS SEASON ON TOP WITH A .405 AVERAGE

CRESTWOOD, IL (Tuesday, August 27, 2002) – The Cook County Cheetahs won their final game of the season, finishing with a 40-44 record, as they beat the second place team in the West Division the Rockford Riverhawks who end their season with a 45-39 record. The Cheetahs battled back offensively in the eighth to take the lead, 3-2, then sent Chad Bircher to the mound to finish the feat.

All-Star third baseman Pichi Balet finished with a .405 average for the 2002 season, which clinched him the Frontier League record for the highest batting average in a single year. Morgan Burkhart set the record back in 1998 with a .404 batting average with the Richmond Roosters. “I really tried not to think about the record too much,” said Balet “I just go out there to hit and rack up the RBI’s.” Balet had 24 more at bats than Burkhart did when he set the record back in 1998. Although Balet clinched the title he went into tonight’s game with a .406 average and had only one at bat tonight which resulted in a strike out. Manager Dana Forsberg made the decision in the top of the second to pull Balet out of the game. “Pichi did an outstanding job all season, “ said Forsberg “He deserved the title and that is why I pulled him out of the game.”

The Cheetahs end their season four games below .500, an improvement over last year’s record of 28-53. Although the Cheetahs will be losing two outfielders, John Schmitz and Josh Wilke, due to the age restriction in the Frontier League, the Cheetahs hope to bring back many key players next year.

Jeffrey,

We couldn't agree more. Pichi had a very special season, and as much as we'd love for him to spend another season in "Cheetahville" (thanks Vern), he deserves a shot at bigger things. He'll get some exposure next month, we'll do what we can to push his stats to MLB clubs in the next couple of weeks.

Congratulations to Pichi on a very special season.

Chuck

Two outfielders? What about James Rinne? Rinne was here for the last two seasons, was an all-star and led the league in doubles last year. How soon we forget. With all due respect to Josh Wilke, he was only a part time member of the Cheetahs. All three will be missed!!!

Pat,

We were referring to the two outfielders we lost to age restriction. James can play for one more year if he chooses - at this point he has decided not to play next year, though he is eligible should he change his mind.

James would be welcomed back to the Cheetahs with open arms should he want to give it one more go.

Chuck
