Are the Cheetahs really going to pick up anyone at these tryouts?? Look at the roster its packed with great players. The pitchers, looking at all stats from last year and college, look solid, the starters listed on the Cheetahs homepage look to be an excellent choice and bullpen looks to be solid with the return of Williams and pickup of Sokoll. Infield is solidified and catcher situation looks great and outfield the speed and ability out there is wonderful. Come on, lets set this roster and get rolling!

Aaron,

I'm with you, I can't wait to see the guys we already have play. Here's the thing about tryouts - you never know what you're going to see. Also, we have a huge number of rookies coming in, and we have to keep at least 10 of them. Of those rookies, there's only one or two that Mike Moore has actually seen play - the rest come, for the most part, from referrals.

What if some of these rookies aren't what we're looking for? The tryout camp is a great way to fill in. Admittedly, coming to a tryout is a longshot for anyone, but again, you never know.

For instance.. it appears that we're losing Rick Stegbauer to a shoulder injury. Hopefully not, but it looks that way at this point. That opens up a spot on the roster.

So, as anxious as we all are to see our team on the field, the tryout is a useful tool for us. Come on out and watch if you like!

So how did the tryouts go?? I stick by what I said and have heard about these players. Seems the Cheetahs have a strong starting pitcher unit, the 5 on webpage, and strong bullpen. The infield and catcher spots are solid and outfield is a strength with great speed.

Aaron,

We did invite two players to camp, we can't release their names until we get them signed to contracts. One is a rookie, one is a veteran. We'll bring them to camp and see what happens.

Aaron,

Following up on your question of before... we are bringing two people to camp from the tryout. One is Dan Brown, a rookie RHP, and the other is Hipolito Martinez, an outfielder who has 7 years in the Brewers' system and also happens to be Sammy Sosa's cousin. We signed him more for his hitting display in the tryouts than his family relations. Brown is raw but has a tremendous arm - it'll be interesting to see how they do in the next 2 weeks.

Today the Cheetahs released OF Hipolito Martinez, LHP Chris Cesario, OF Kazuo Yana, RHP Yohei Yazawa, INF Naoki Komatsu, C Ryan Gober, C Rick Stegbauer, 1B Jon Hambleton, LHP Brian Wanek and OF Dusty Bowling. This leaves the Cheetahs training roster at 32.

Stegbauer was released due to a re-injury of his rotator cuff and Hambleton was released after not reporting to training camp. The other released players are all rookies, except Martinez, who the team released so he could pursue opportunities with other teams.

I am a huge Div. III baseball fan. I have seen many top players play at that level. Could you let me know how the Div. III guys are doing? Mike Ott, Paul Molitor and Randy Reed. I had a chance to see all three play, and they are players.

Brian,

Mike Ott has returned to Michigan to take a teaching job, and Paul and Randy are still in camp.

I have seen Reed and Molitor play last year at the Regional tournaments and they can play. I thought they brought a lot to their team which had obvious success. Ott I played with for 2 years at Calvin and will agree he is a player. He is an asset to a team with his character and his ability. He can plain out pitch and hopefully he will be pitching as a Cheetah. He would bring a lot to this team, as I think both would and would crush the myth of Division III players can't play.
