im not a big believer in bringing in a "name" to be manager. sure you may put more people in the seats, for what to see him take out the lineup for ground rules. no one comes to watch the manager manage the game. the last time i went to a game i watched the players. besides to be a good manager your only as good as your assistant coaches and players. just ask joe torre that question. if you have a team that is in contention for the league or divisional crown all year you will have people in the stands, no matter who the manager is.

Folks,

Thanks for your comments about the next manager - we will probably make that decision next month, after some of the smoke has cleared around here. We here at the ballpark read the same things you do in the paper, so some of the things we'd normally do at this time of year have been put a bit on hold as we see what direction the team takes.

Personally, I do agree that bringing in a 'name' guy isn't always the way to go. First, you never know if they can actually manage 30 people (players, coaches, trainer, etc.) - I know the Cheetahs have had some interesting experiences with former big leaguers. Second, it's been my experience in other places that when you bring in a former big-leaguer, that person is immediately looking for his NEXT job, rather than giving 100 percent to the current one.

I will tell you that Greg Beck will certainly be very high among the candiates, if I have any say in the decision. More than a few players talked to me about him prior to the end of the season, which is very impressive in itself. The players won't make that decision, but it's good to know there's someone out there they'd go to war with. Beyond that, we'll see how the next few weeks shake out.

Thanks again for the comments, it's good to see that people care about what happens here in Crestwood.

Chuck

My main reason for wanting a "name" guy is that theoretically, a guy with some name recognition would have the respect of the players when he walks into that clubhouse on day one.

come on. is that your main reason. this is professional baseball, not college summer league. if players dont walk into the clubhouse with respect on the first day, then they shouldnt be called professionals. besides, respect is earned not given.

Sure its professional baseball. But its also developmental professional baseball. Also, whether you like it or not, managers lose the respect of their clubhouses all the time. Just ask Jim Riggleman and Don Baylor how much respect the "professional" Sammy Sosa gave them on Day one. Dusty Baker was a name manager, and he managed to get Sosa in line on day one. Now, either Sosa isn't "professional" or there's something to be said for a manager with name recognition. I'm not saying that name recognition should be the only critera, nor should it be the most important. But I think it at least merits consideration.
