Subject: The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich

Author:

Date Posted: 09:05:56 07/24/08 Thu

This is the All South Dakota Read 2008 selection. Erdrich, a North Dakota Native, living in Minnesota, weaves an intriguing story set in the difficult days of the 1930's in the dry plains of North Dakota. Her characters are a mixture of the taciturn German/Russian imigrant stock and the Native Americans melding with the community--also free-range children and their adventures. Well worth the reading time. Ms. ERdrich will be a guest at the SD FEstival of Books in Sious Falls in September. It is a delightful experience to hear an author speak of the process and the work. "The Unreals" is a totally original and wildly funny fantasy novel. A young man sets out in search of his grandfather, who has mysteriously vanished without a trace. He is joined by a crazy group of unforgettable characters, and after finally landing in a time-traveling cornfield, they wind up in the secret sub-basement of an Iowan mental institution. This is a great book, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

This gothic-toned mystery is set on the tiny island of Winter Haven, off the coast of Maine. Vera, an accountant who finds comfort and order in her life by working with numbers and statistics, goes to the island to bring her brother's body, which had washed up on the shore of Winter Haven, back to Dallas. She is shocked to see that although she has not seen her autistic brother in 20 years he hasn't aged a day since she last saw him. Vera soon discovers there are many secrets to be uncovered on this eerie island. But in spite of her fear of the unknown, hostility of the townspeople and sorrow for the loss of her brother, she finds love with a mysterious and handsome man who owns a run-down mansion on a cliff high above the Atlantic Ocean. If you enjoy a mystery in an exotic setting with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure, check out this book.

If you enjoy Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter then you're going to love Kim Vogel Sawyer. She does a phenomenal job in "Bygones" of weaving together a story of a mother and daughter's journey home to faith, love, and family. This is the first book of the Sommerfeld Trilogy. I've started the second book, "Beginnings" and it's equally as compelling.

This is the story about almost-thirty-and-just-jilted Daisy Murien, who opened a second hand wedding gown shop after being left at the altar. She sews blue hearts into each of the used gowns that have been blessed by Father Laurent, a retired priest that lives upstairs. Daisy learns throughout the book that God's love for her can heal her broken heart. Blue Heart Blessed is a touching book that you won't want to put down.

Subject: "Read All About It!" by Laura & Jenna Bush

Author:

First Lady Laura Bush and her daughter Jenna have collaborated to create this wonderful children's EasyBook that tells the tale of Tyrone, a reluctant reader who enjoys recess more than the classroom. That is, until Miss Libro the librarian introduces him to the many exciting characters and fun adventures waiting for him between the covers of a book!
"Read All About It" is the perfect way to spark the interest of beginning readers and those entering grade-school. The authors also stress the importance of reading during the summer months when reading skills often decline. Keep your children active and involved in education and reading throughout the summer and they will be well-prepared when school begins again in the fall!

Not an easy reading book as it has been translated from french but very interesting. Excellant source for first impressions of the Missouri river headwaters area, Big Stone Lake, etc. Appendix #3 Nicollet's Notes of the Dakota was very informative.

Subject: Book "Someday" by Karen Kingsbury (final book in Firstborn series)

Summary: "Recently married Dayne and Katy Matthews are separated as they make movies in different parts of the world. The tabloid newspapers spread terrible rumors of their 'separation' and possible unfaithfulness to each other. Dayne's father, John Baxter, and his good friend, Elaine, grow in their relationship together. Other members of the Baxter family experience life;s struggles but with their love for each other and their Christian faith, they pull through."
This was another excellent book by Karen Kingsbury! The comforting family-oriented stories of the Baxter family come to an end in this book. I will miss them.
