Hi Wendy: I can tell you why I enjoyed wearing dresses when I was nine. First, I really enjoyed the transformative sensation of the fabrics and the way the garments felt. They were so unlike the somber boys' clothes my mother expected me to wear. They made me feel energetic and alive. Perhaps an escape into softness from the boyish harshness I was exposed to in my daily life.

Second, they represented self-determination. I knew garments like hosiery were intended for girls, but I enjoyed wearing them. So if I did so in the face of social convention, I was establishing my own identity based on my feelings and needs, and not expectations that others placed on me.

My thought is that if your son enjoys dresses, get him an ultrafeminine outfit like a communion dress with tights, shoes, and a wig, see how he reacts, and go from there. My guess is that he will love it. I know I would have, at his age.

I'm sorry if he is despondent. I wish the best for all concerned.
