I think this is so neat! Now I'm starting to think about having my Danni compete in one of these. He's about your child's age and loves to look pretty wearing all girls clothes. Myself, I manage a salon and I've always encouraged Danni to look and think pretty. I've entered him in Ballet classes and he's the only boy there and loves it. It's given him a true gracefulness that you only find in some girls his age. This year, though I've also entered him in a co-ed martial arts class to help him with self assuredness if he's ever challenged about being well....girly, which he obviously is.
Now about the hair thing. I wish I could have Danni's hair waist length if possible but reality says it's really not workable, so what i do is use different hair extensions that are available and carefully match these to Danni's hair color. Since your child's hair is below the shoulders, and he's able to wear it to school this way without any really bad problems, it seems that you could find that a really nice layering job would work fine with maybe some neat hair extensions, or how about you doing something with your curling iron. I'll bet you both can have fun with that! Another thing. If pierced ears aren't in the picture yet, I know that "Claires" boutiques have some really cute clip earrings for young girls. I've suggested this or a couple of other moms who want to encourage femininity in their boys along with pretty hair and more.
Just some thoughts;
Becca
