Sheri: proceed slowly would be my first advice. Also, if your son is going to be in kindergarten (since he's 5), I would tell the school that he might be in girl's clothes, too.
One thing I will say is that he might be bullied, so be prepared for him to be sad. Just support him and let him decide on how fast he wants to be a girl.
