There is also a similar subculture in one section of Mexico: the muxe culture. Muxes are natal boys whose mothers raise them as girls. They usually stay with their mothers and take care of them in their old age. The muxes are generally well respected in the community there in Mexico and that have certain ceremonial, as well as economic, roles in the culture.

One unfortunate thing about the muxes and also the fa'afafines is that the economic conditions in their communities usually cannot provide the proper treatments (hormones and surgery) for complete transformation. Some of the muxes have been able to get breast implants and/or to get hormones sometimes, but many have not been able to access those treatments.
