Corey, This article continues the misleading conclusions of previous, seriously flawed, research. The central issue in terms of methodology and interpretation of results is that IF (as in the NY Times article) one confounds the "gender nonconforming" children classification with the "transgender" children classification, it is not possible to produce reliable or valid findings with regard to either group! Yes, for children accurately evaluated as "gender nonconforming", many of them will not go on to a full social or physical change to the other gender. However, for children (including very young children) who are accurately assessed at "transgender" almost ALL of them will, indeed, proceed (or desperately want to proceed) to a full transition to the affirmed gender (which of course for MtF kids would mean making the full and permanent transition to girlhood and womanhood.)

Besides the methodological flaws in the studies that confound these two groups (gender nonconfoming vs. transgender), the "interpretations" of these studies have been used by politically motivated people and groups who are anti-transgender to discourage or prevent access to proper treatment for those children and teens who are truly transgender.
