Subject: Re: LRKC LOGO PROPOSAL

To engender more discussion, ideas and thoughts on the proposal to change the LRKC logo, I thought the following might be of interest.

This present logo was adopted by the LRKC during the early 1990s, proposed by Derek Brown who had found it in Richard A Wolters, The Labrador Retriever: The history - The People - Revisited. (1992). Wolters had copied it (with copyright permission) from an original crayon drawing by Sarah Grice of Ch Bumblikite of Mansergh. It appears as a frontispiece in Mary Roslin-Williams’ book The Dual-Purpose Labrador (1969).

Pages 92-93 of The Dual-Purpose Labrador describe how Ch Bumblikite of Mansergh was the model used by Royal Doulton to create the black Labrador Retriever figurine which was sold throughout the world. In 1961 Pam Jenkin, wife of George Jenkin, the founder of the LRKC in South Africa, donated to the club the beautiful Royal Doulton figurine of Ch Bumblikite of Mansergh mounted on a wooden plinth.

Pam’s trophy became known as the Beadles Trophy and is awarded to the Best in Show at the LRKC Championship Show. Her interest in this figurine was increased because Ch Bumblikite of Mansergh and their own Ch Baron of Beadles shared the same sire.

It is a notable coincidence that the drawing of the head and the figurine should feature so prominently in the LRKC history and records, and relate back to the club’s foundation.

Since the present LRKC logo has a context and a history, similar to that of the Labrador Retriever Club in the UK (Ch Liddly Cornflower – the logo for the last 30 years) in that it depicts a real dog rather than a generic outline or profile used by many dog clubs around the world, how about a re-design of the original, with permission from Miss Anne Roslyn-Williams, and make use of the services of a designer?
