Danúbia,

After reading your doubt, I read again about "cohesion" and "information structure" trying to understand better about their differences.

COHESION - The cohesion of a text is the result of the use of various cohesive ties to explicitly link together all the propositions in a text. For example: the connectors.
There are four types of grammatical ties: reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunction; as well as a variety of lexical ties to be considered.
Lexical cohesion is the result of chains of related words that contribute to the continuity of lexical meaning. These lexical chains are a direct result of units of text being "about the same thing," and finding text structure involves finding units of text that are about the same thing.
(J Morris, G Hirst, 1991)

INFORMATION STRUCTURE – It refers to the presentation of “old” (known) information and “new” (unknown) information. The terms THEME and RHEME are used by European researchers to indicate which bits of information are old and which are new, respectively. American researchers use the terms TOPIC and COMMENT.

SUMMARIZING - I think the great difference between cohesion and information structure is that the former is the way ideas and information are linked to each other in the text, and the latter is how the information is presented related with the known (old) and unknown (new) information.

Am I right? Who can add something else?

best,

Ignês Cecília
