I fully understand what you mean... As in "Genitive case" or "There to be". As they are usually studied in the first months, students tend to try to find similarities between Portuguese and English (beginners always do that!) and they are quite different.
In my opinion, teaching deductive or inductively depends on the topic, as well as the learners...
