Here is my suggestion: whenever students are assigned a writting activity, the teacher should not correct the problems, but just highlight them. If the teacher creates a table of symbols, for instance, and use them to show in the text what must be rewritten, maybe he/ she will achive better results than just scoring texts as "excellent", "very good" or "fair". What I mean is, if the teacher circle repeated words in the text and write a note to the students, it is likely that they will remember synonyms or look for other possibilities, no matter by substituting or by deleting. Of course, the labeling of "hyponyms" or "hiperonyms", "ellipsis" or "reiteration" will depend on how mature students are, and not necessarily need do be presented. I believe that sometimes students lack a critique on their written production. This experience has been used for some time with Portuguese teaching, in "aulas de redaçăo". I do believe that it works with English as well
