Subject: Pragmatics Acquisition

First of all, I’d like to congratulate the group on the beautiful presentation. It was a 52-content slide sequence worth reading. You guys made excellent choices concerning illustration. The pictures and drawings were really helpful while I was reading.

I believe all main aspects concerning Issues in Acquisitional Pragmatics have been covered. You pointed the appropriateness of linguistic knowledge as needed for effective communication and that learners should be able to perform speech acts. They need to be skilled in producing and interpreting utterances containing ‘specific intentions as well as Illocutionary Force.
It was also pointed that while advanced linguistic knowledge will not necessarily make a learner pragmatically competent such competence will not be achieved without grammar/linguistic knowledge.
Sociolinguistic and Psycholinguist aspects were mentioned as affecting how much a learner will be ‘open’ to different cultural behavior and their ‘willingness’ to acquire the pragmatics of L2.
Theories related to Speech Accommodation, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, and Language Socialization were also very helpful to understand the process of Pragmatics acquisition.

While reading all the material, I found myself wondering how differences in gender and age groups would interfere in learners process of pragmatics acquisition and how teachers should address such aspects and decide on explicit or implicit approaches to pragmatics in L2. The text and the presentation bring some hints on that matter by mentioning young students as more likely to become more pragmatically competent (I initially thought it would be the opposite). As for gender, does the text imply that women are more aware of the emotional aspects of pragmatics?
