TIFFANY STOKER MADSEN
Tiffany Madsen, Miss California 1995 (3rd Runner-Up to Miss America), and America’s Junior Miss 1992, has a distinguished academic career. She was the Valedictorian of her high school graduating class, was graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brigham Young University and was graduated Cum Laude from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, where she earned a Juris Doctorate. Tiffany often credits the Miss California and Miss America Organization scholarships for making it possible for her to attend law school.
She used her law degree to practice labor and employment law. She performed internationally as a singer/dancer/actor
in Morocco, Spain and Tunisia with the BYU Young Ambassadors. During the talent segment of the live telecast of the Miss America Pageant, Tiffany’s vocal performance of “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera” caught the attention of prominent Broadway Producer Hal Prince, who cast her in the role of Kim in the traveling company of “Showboat”.
Tiffany has enjoyed many opportunities, in both small groups and on national television, to encourage young people to set
and reach their goals. She also continues to speak to young people about her Miss California platform, “Sexual Abstinence for Teenagers”.
Tiffany now a full time wife and mother, her husband Josh, a medical doctor and their three children, ages 6,4 and 2,
recently moved back to California and reside in Clovis.
RICHARD WOODS
Richard Woods is a native of Fresno. He began performing at an early age as a member of Roger Rocka’s Junior Company
Players with former Roosevelt graduate Audra McDonald. While at Fresno State, he discovered a love for opera and
ultimately attended the Julliard School of Music at Lincoln Center as a member of the Julliard Opera Center.
Soon Mr. Woods was noticed by New York City Opera where he made his professional Debut in Tosca at 23. Mr. Woods
eventually was hired full time by the company and served as house base baritone where he went on to perform numerous
roles throughout the nineties. He honed his singing and performance skills spending his summers in young artist programs including Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Wolf Trap Opera Company in Vienna, and two tours with the Merola Program’s Western Opera Theater in San Francisco. Richard has won several awards including the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions at both the district and regional levels, and the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition.
In the midst of his budding operatic career, Richard decided that being away from his wife and two sons was too great a sacrifice to make for all involved. A career in music education proved the best way to utilize his vast music and performance experience. Relocating his family back home to Fresno, Richard took over the duties as Vocal Music Director for Roosevelt School of the Arts.
Riichard performs regularly with the Fresno Grand Opera Company and is thrilled to have the opportunity to help prepare Roosevelt’s talented students for their turn at a successful career in music..

I'm not sure if this is old news or not, but in the latest issue of Savvy magazine (a combined pageant and beauty magazine that's been around about a year or so), both Crystal and Jackie are featured. Crystal is one of eight winners of the "Fresh Faces" contest sponsored by the MAOT organization and Be...ybf Beauty. The contest recognizes young women who "project positive self-esteem, are committed to their communities, understand true friendship and are outstanding role models in their scholastic and personal endeavors." See more at http://www.ybfstacey.com/beybf/

Jackie was included in a photo spread of "red carpet" gowns at Miss America and their Oscar/Golden Globe counterparts. Jackie's black velvet evening gown is compared to Angelina Jolie's Oscar dress. Also featured are Miss Iowa and Natalie Portman, and Miss Georgia and Eva Longoria.

Nice to see both of our fabulous 2008 titleholders featured!

Subject: Nice article to about Miss California 2003, Nicole Lamarche

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/03/10/from_swimsuit_competition_glamour_to_parish_pulpit_clamor/

COTUIT - On a recent Sunday morning, 30-year-old Nicole Lamarche, a former Miss California, stood before a crowd in a simple clapboard church next to a local watering hole. She wore high-heeled boots, her thin figure draped in a black robe.

"I feel so lucky to be your pastor," she proclaimed.

Lamarche became minister of Cotuit Federated Church two years ago, shaking up its stodgy routine and causing quite a stir in this quiet Cape Cod village of about 2,600 year-round residents.

She says four parishioners defected early on, after people Googled her name and discovered her beauty pageant past, but these days residents credit Lamarche with injecting new dynamism into the town and the church.

Lamarche says she understands that for some the "pastor in a swimsuit thing" is hard to swallow, but she simply needed the money. Loyal members of her congregation accept her explanation, buoying her spirits. Plus, says Lamarche, "If you can walk on a stage in your swimsuit, you can do anything."

After a service earlier this year, the congregation gathered for coffee, fruit salad, and cookies in an adjoining reception room, chattering with each other and the pastor who was once Miss Desert Vista.

"Just listen to it," said Pam Bode, a member of the church since 1985. "This is a church that has come alive."

"She's good for God," agreed Norman Knight, a 79-year-old retired welder, one of about a hundred regular members of the church who now attend weekly.

The path from beauty-pageant winner to pastor has not always been smooth. Lamarche grew up going to church near her hometown of Chattaroy, Wash., and joined a campus ministry group when she started college at the University of Arizona. An international relations major, she planned to join the foreign service after graduation.

The minister at her church suggested she consider seminary school instead. She had her doubts, but agreed to attend a "ministry as vocation" weekend at the Pacific School of Religion in California after the minister offered to pay her airfare to Berkeley. She enrolled and started the following year.

But Lamarche needed money, she recalled, and she was drawn to scholarship prizes she heard about in pageant competition.

Her first attempt was for the Miss Tucson title in 2000. Things did not go well. Recently returned from a backpacking trip around Europe, she had what she describes as "a short German haircut."

She cried onstage during the swimsuit competition and wore an old prom dress for the evening wear portion. She walked away empty-handed.

But in 2001, she became Miss Desert Vista, coming in first runner-up for Miss Arizona later that year.

When she moved to California that summer for seminary school, she thought her pageant days were behind her. But the mother of the 1998 Miss California winner found Lamarche on an online message board and convinced her to compete.

She won a succession of titles - Miss Greater Bay Area and Miss San Francisco - before becoming Miss California in 2003.

That brought her to the Miss America pageant, a new level of competition. The stakes were higher: over $50,000 in scholarships.

And it meant going on stage in a swimsuit in front of 12 million people. Lamarche was overwhelmed by the tricks contestants from some of the Southern states introduced her to - like spraying glue on butt cheeks to keep swimsuits in place and wrapping moisturized legs in plastic wrap to reduce cellulite - but went on to win the swimsuit competition and came in fourth runner-up overall, earning herself $24,000 in prize money.

The seminary school website racked up the most hits in its history because of a link from ESPN's site, which covered the event.

When the Cotuit church's search committee found Lamarche to replace its retiring pastor, some members were not so sure it was a good decision. Young, single female pastors are often viewed as risky and unpredictable.

This made her first six months in Cotuit tough. She received complaints from the congregation, sometimes that the service was too short, sometimes too long.

But over time, things improved. Church members were willing to try new things, like worshipping on the beach during the summer or inviting a speaker to lecture on the difference between Sunni and Shia Islam.

Lamarche, who sang Billy Vera & the Beaters's song "At This Moment" for the talent portion of the Miss America competition, has also incorporated more music into church services.

When she got married last summer in California, to a man she met in seminary school, the church threw them a reception in Cotuit, renting a tent from a local museum and shucking clams and oysters for a meal. There was singing and a blessing.

On a recent Sunday morning, the smell of maple syrup from an early-morning pancake breakfast filled the church. Young girls handed out programs at the entrance.

And Lamarche, just back from a belated honeymoon in Morocco, greeted everyone by name before asking for any special requests for prayers.

A woman raised her hand to tell her about two of her friends fighting breast cancer. A man asked for a blessing for his daughter who had recently given birth to a healthy baby boy. And a girl asked everyone to pray for a friend who had just been in a car accident.

"I bring my kids, who are 9 and 14, and my 77-year-old mother, and we all find something in this church," says Leslie Shinn, 45, a public school aide who first came to the church in 1990. Her husband initially had reservations about the new young pastor, but eventually joined the church and even became a trustee.

"She exudes goodness," Shinn said.

I just talked to our field director, Russ Gladden, who said it looks like contestant turnout might be low at the Southern California Sweeps Pageant. If you're interested in going to Miss California and have competed at least once, this could be your chance. Entry information is listed on the Miss California Website. Pageant date is April 5 in Encino (same location as Miss Hollywood and San Fernando Valley Teen pageants.)

I don't know about you guys, but I am especially impressed this year with Katie's fitness! She looked rockin' in swimsuit at Miss America, and you can see in recent pictures, she continues to have really well defined arms and a great shape. I read a magazine called "Oxygen," which is a women's fitness magazine, and I love it. I think Katie looks as good as the women they out on their cover each month, and I think people would love to read about how she got to where she is, and what her workouts are like. Plus, I have a pet passion for trying to get press coverage for Miss America titleholders from the local level on up, because I think the organization needs my help! And the more people see her, the more people will become interested in her, and in the organization, and will be more likely to donate, volunteer, compete, or at the very least watch.

So! I have e-mailed the editor at Oxygen magazine, saying how impressive I think Katie is, and that I, for one, would love to see her on the cover, and inside the magazine, talking about her commitment to fitness and her workouts as she manages her crazy schedule, etc. But I know they will be more likely to listen if mine is not the only e-mail!!!!

Please check out the magazine at www.oxygenmag.com, and e-mail them to beg for a cover for Katie at editorial@oxygenmag.com!!

I also think they'd be more likely to listen if MAO themselves made contact with the magazine, so I e-mailed the PR contact listed on the Miss America website.

Have fun and let me know what you think, or post the e-mail you send here to give others ideas!!!!

Dear Tom,

I would like your professional opinion on young ladies who are selected to enter a pageant of one system, then go ahead and enter another? I know this kind of stuff happens all the time, but should their be rules in place that prevent a girl from being accepted as a contestant for one pageant system, then decides to enter another system, then wins and now she cannot no longer compete in the initial pageant she was accepted to be a contestant in?

Welcome to the New Miss California Message Board!

This board will be monitored constantly. The purpose of it is not to bash contestants, bad-mouth other organizations or MOST IMPORTANTLY -- to insult our current Miss California Jackie Geist and Miss California's Outstanding Teen Crystal Lee.

Since now some of you are asking yourselves - "What do we talk about?" here are some ideas.

- Upcoming local pageants and contestants involved, their talent etc.
- Information about the Miss California Organization
- Duties of a titleholder
- Successes of our local titleholders - Lets be proud of our girls!
-For Ex: If one is in a play, won a scholarship, was a guest speaker...
-CONSTRUCTIVE criticism
- Don't insult people there is a difference
- Ex: "She is really fat." vs. "She may need to get a trainer and tone up."

Enjoy this message board. It is time for a change. We need to stop ignoring this problem and begin using this resource as a positive way to communicate about our organization.

Miss Napa Committee thanks and congratulates Sarah Rutan and Cindy Huynh for their extraordinary initiative and committment to representing their local titles far above and beyond anything asked of you!

I was thinking of this today, while both are volunteering for Napa Active 20/30 club's Project Santa since 6:30 AM to help shop and wrap 600 gifts for underpriveleged children; then tonight appearing at yet another community tree lighting.

So far, Sarah has made about 30 appearances and Cindy 15. Sarah and Cindy - you're amazing and generous young ladies and MNC committee thanks you and your wonderful families!

PS Sarah keeps our web site updated with appearance photos at missnapacounty.org and we invite you to visit.
