  • While a greatly admire his talent, fell in love with the character Harm, and enjoy his acting tremendously (good or bad); what really drew me to him--and keeps me there--is his devotion to his family and his kindness towards his fans. I've been lucky to meet him twice and even though he was slightly exasperated due to circumstances, he was still very gracious, very friendly, and very kind to me.   • For me, it was, indeed, Harm that drew me in -- I thought -- Wow, a tall, dark, and handsome actor who can actually act and make this wonderful character so believable and real. After JAG, living abroad, I didn't get to see anything else DJE did for a long time . I had really thought he would be scooped up to play major hearthrob, leading man roles in major movies, but that didn't happen.I was so disappointed, but I thought that maybe he didn't go after these or put himself out there for them. When he started showing up in TV movies and guest spots on shows, it was great to see him acting again. The fact that he prioritized his family over hopping onto the next career ladder, intrigued me, and has made me admire him, as a person. I still think he's a fine actor and EXTREMELY watchable and would love to see him back in a regular series or, at least, in many many more diversified roles, in TV, in movies, and even on the stage!   • I agree with the other fans that it was indeed the dashing Commander Harmon Rabb character that first drew my interest to DJE, but the more I researched him the more I came to admire not only his acting skills but his very down to earth attitude he had away from the screeen as a dedicated husband and father.   I was surfin' around and came across a JAG site that struck me. Ok, so not the site itself, but a group of people within the site. What got me, was that this small group of people actually *HATED* the Harm character. I am not saying that Harm was just not their favorite character…..they actually HATED him.
  
  I have to ask……… Why would you watch a show you say you love, that is centered on a character you hate?
  
  I am not stupid, I know that there are a lot of people out there who watched JAG because they followed other actors or they liked other characters better. I get that, really I do. But to HATE the main character?? Dislike I can maybe understand, but HATE?
  
  Harm was such a huge part of the JAG show, how do you get past that? How do you just skip by the parts that he was in? If you did that, there isn’t much left.
  
  Again, I am not dumb. I know there are fans out there that follow the show for other characters. But still...Hate?
  
  Oh, and I am not talking about just non-shippers. The ones who would prefer that Harm found a romantic partner with anyone other than Mac (and conversely, the people who wanted Mac to find a romantic partner with anyone other than Harm…). This group of fans is a group that I can completely understand.
  
  As much as I was not a 'fan' of some of the characters on the show, I did not hate any of them. Each and every character on JAG brought something to the show. Even Palmer. I wasn’t cheering him on by any means, and I really wanted Harm to 'get him', but I didn’t hate Palmer. He was a good character.
  
  Ok, so rant done for now LOL... I would love your perspective on this. As to why someone would watch a show that they say they ‘love’, that completely centers on a character you ‘hate’.
  
  Oh, and please, please, do not bash the actors who play the roles. The actors have nothing to do with my question ... this is solely based on the 'Characters'. Thanks...

  • Gosh, that's just crazy!! Why do they 'HATE' Harm? Do these people feel the character was unrealistic, do they not like his personality, do they feel he treated women poorly -- what?!   • It really doesn't make a lot of sense that they would 'love' a show and yet 'hate' the main character. My only thought is that they must be jealous that the actress they 'love' doesn't have the starring role in the series and isn't the main character.   • I certainly couldn't watch any series where I actually 'HATED' the main character. What pleasure is there in that? Harm was the central character around which the success of JAG pivoted. This was proved when JAG could not continue without Harm. Of course we all had characters we disliked (in my case Lukovic) but they all added spice to the series. • Okay, Is it just me, or does anyone else think that David doens't need to go back to do a JAG movie or work with CB again in the near future? Apparently there's a report by a CB fan that CB's husband has written a spec script for a JAG movie, and except for saying that Harm and Mac are 'happy' and that one of them is still in the service, the fan isn't talking about it.   • Well, I was asking a question about that. I have heard that David would say in a interview that he said that "Maybe I would go back in another time" But, I really don't know for sure that he would go back because he was very tired working for 10 years. I heard that he couldn't get along with DPB that he has trouble with I would love for him to go back for JAG renunion movie and watch it.   • I think CB and DJE played off each other very well in JAG and did have some intense chemistry going on. They have both grown and changed since JAG, though, and a 're-visit' to JAG and to 'them' would be a tricky endeavor and might, indeed, ruin any magic that was created and what we were left with.   There has been talk lately about whether or not DJE should do NCIS, since they are looking for a new agent. IMHO, I would not want to see him on the NCIS with Mark Harmon. I don't think that it would work well with two "lead" actors on the same show. It might cause ego conflict. I think it would be a step back for DJE. Would he portray a new character altogether? Would he be Harm? With the connectionn of NCIS and JAG, would people accept DJE as another person on NCIS? I don't know if I explained myself well, but what is your opinion?

  • Just a personal opinion - but I think it would be a disaster for David to take on a role in NCIS. All the other characters are now too well developed for him to find a prominent niche there. Also the rumour was for a new character in his 30's so it would probably be a fairly junior role. I want to see him back on our tv screens as the leading actor in his own series.   Okay, like many of us here, I get my share of DJE Google/Yahoo! Alerts. I got this one alert a few days ago, for a blog where the the blogger talked about "Impact". They out something like...."...stars David James Elliott (who?)", and that seemed to upset some DJE fans (I won't say who) that commented. They seemed really upset that this person didn't know who DJE was.
  
  I don't get what is so wrong with that. I'm sure there are a number of people who don't know who he is. It just upsets me that some people think everyone should know about David and all the shows he was in.

I also saw the responses made in defence of David by a couple of fans which unfortunately has caused a reaction, where the floodgates for abuse have opened, not only for David but for the posters themselves.   • Well I have to disagree about GWTW, mj. There is only one Rhett Butler...Clark GAble. To me its the same as someone else being Harm...It just wouldnt work. Now, From Here to Eternity, I can see DJE in that role, big time.(I'd volunteer for the female lead and not even mind getting sand in my suit.;)) I think DJE is much more suited to roles like Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart did.       • OMG -- I just saw an ORIGINAL Gary Cooper film from his very early days -- it was even dubbed in Italian (it was on very late at night on some obscure channel here) and I think the movie was "A Farewell To Arms" which, if I recall, Rock Hudson starred in a re-make of this film. Anyway -- I thought IMMEDIATELY of DJE as I observed GCs smoldering, but innocent-boy looks. • I've noticed a pattern forming regarding David's choice of roles since leaving JAG, which is fast becoming a hot topic of discussion as he takes on new roles. As time has passed, fans have become more vocal in their negative opinion of the choices he's made as he continues on with his acting career.   Fans have all kinds of reasons for being fans, but the one thing we can all agree on is that David is a fine actor. We all know that his role as Harm in JAG set the bar impossibly high, and that he is more than likely seeking to distance himself from the role in order to avoid being typecast, not to mention the want to branch out and try new things after playing the same role for 10 years. It's been 4 years since JAG ended, and let's face it: David's role as Harm is a tough act to follow - as we knew it would be - and in the post-Harm era, we have all developed a set of expectations as to what types of roles we think David should play. He has certainly chosen parts that are outside the comfort zone of some fans, and it seems that many are struggling, in my opinion, to understand why he's made certain choices.
  
  In this internet age where information is just about instantaneous, where I used to think it was a benefit, I'm beginning to think that maybe instant gratification is not such a great thing. Here's why:
  
  With the ability to get news as it happens, and the ability to garner information we would not normally be privy to so early in the process, I believe we set our expectations to a level that's just not practical. In other words, we're spoiled: the moment we learn that David is going to be in a project, we find out rather quickly the minute details that years ago we wouldn't have had access to, including sides from scripts, synopses, and bits of information from various sources, however trivial. Some may view this as an advantage, but I'm beginning to see it as a disadvantage: maybe we know too much too soon, and it sets us up for disappointment. For with this limited knowledge, we often pre-judge a project and deem it worthy or unworthy without having any intimate knowledge or having seen the project in its completed form.
  
  It seems to me that lately, we are so thirsty for any information concerning David - whether rumor or fact - that we do him a great disservice by judging his projects, often without knowing anything about them besides a blurb in a publication. I've seen more and more, fans reading a synopsis or taking a couple of lines of script and instantly determining the worth of the project without having seen the finished product. More recently, with his new movie, 'Bed and Breakfast,' already fans have been turned off solely by the knowledge that the director is known for making horror movies.
  
  My question is, how is that fair to David? As he plies his craft, we bear witness to his diverse talent. Fans are so quick to rush to judgment these days. I know it's easy to try to fit David into this little box where he only plays the hero or something that is considered "worthy" of him. I'd sure like to know what that is, honestly. Other fans are beginning to think that this is all David is being offered when we know no such thing. There is an awful lot of speculation and jumping to conclusions going on, and it's happening more and more as time goes by. I understand that when it comes to different genres, we all have our opinions, likes and dislikes. That's a given. But to predetermine a project's worth solely on the limited information we're given for a project we know almost nothing about is a disservice to David in my opinion.
  
  David has been in the business for many years and has been very successful as an actor. Fans love the man, yet they constantly question his decisions; in my opinion, the tenor of posts in recent months tells me that the fans don't trust his ability to determine what is right for him. I imagine that he's been around long enough to know what he's doing and has made enough money in his career, so is not desperate for work. I wonder why the fans don't look at David's career with an open mind, trust that he knows what he's doing, and look at each project knowing that he chose it because he saw something of worth in it that we're not seeing.
  
  I'd like to discuss this because my opinion isn't all there is. I'd really love to see fans come out and give their feedback so we can get a better understanding of what other fans think. Can fans not get beyond Harm? Is DJE just a mediocre actor taking mediocre parts? Should he take his career behind the camera? Should he hold out for better, more prominent roles? I value your opinion and would love to hear your feelings on the subject.

  • I never knew DJE in anything else but JAG as I've lived out of the states for 25 years. After realizing that, yes, he's been in ALOT of shows and has impressive theatre experience and training, I think that he can do whatever he darn well pleases at this point in his career. Like all actors, he has to read scripts and make decisions and sometimes it's just hit and miss in that game. Rarely does an actor get it right all the time.   • Since I have expressed strong opinions, pro and con about DJE's recent projects, I'll jump in here. I am usually willing to give him the beneift of the doubt and am willing to wait until I can judge for myself. I got furious with that Ausiello for the smarmy things he said about KoB before it aired. I wasnt really impressed with the show when I saw it, but it makes no difference to me if he does Sci fi, its an acquired taste, I think.   • I plan on seeing any show and every show that I can that DJE does. Once I've seen it, then I'll make my decision. I am not fond of horror movies, but maybe it is more thriller than horror. I'll still go to see it and make my decision afterword. I have seen other actors that I enjoy do various projects and while I haven't loved them all, I still saw them.   • I wanted to add my thoughts to this. I love DJE ever since discovery JAG last year. However my heart sank when I saw that David was appearing in a film with Michael Madsen. Why? Well I am personally a big fan of Michael's have loads of films but over the last few years he has mainly been cast in very low budget quickly shot movies if you look at his imdb page you will see he has a lot of films listed either just finished, filming or in pre-production. However, I also will be ready to give it a chance when it is released and really hope that my misgivings are unfounded. I will be very happy to see that I am wrong.   • It bothers me, too, although I haven't seen those thoughts anywhere. Some peole believe that if an actor isn't visible weekly, doing TV or movies, then they're 'washed up'. Don't agree with that, but just stating how some might think. As for me, while I know DJE has the right to appear in whatever he wants, he seems lately to be choosing roles that will 'test' his fanbase. • MJ brings up a subject I think would make a good topic of discussion. I have often read of concerns that DJE should be in projects that "do him justice" or that we feel are "worthy of him." But what are they? What projects fit that criteria?   We don't know what roles he's offered, be it a drama, sitcom, movie, etc. I've read that people think that he doesn't fit the Hollywood mold or that Hollywood doesn't acknowledge his talent, but what if he's been making the choices, not the other way around? He is obviously being offered plenty of work, but he also has a family. We've read that he prefers to be with his family and may not take roles that require him to spend too much time from home. How does that factor into the types of roles he chooses?
  
  I'd love to know what the fans think are a good fit, or what his considered beneath his talent. I see alot of people wanting to fit him into a box - something that's been done already. Why not think outside the box and come up with an idea that is original? I don't want to see him in a movie or TV role that's been there, done that. Wouldn't that be boring? Wouldn't we wind up comparing his performance to that of the original actor(s) and set ourselves up for disappointment? I think this is where we get into trouble.
  
  So I have a couple of questions to ask:
  
  Given his talent, what type of roles do you think would make him shine? Drama? Romance? Comedy? Theater? And no giving examples of movies/shows that are already airing/have aired.
  
  And what do you think is "beneath him" and why?
  
  We know he's talented - he is one of the fortunate actors who as never wanted for work for most of his career - so are we giving him enough credit to know that he's capable of choosing the right roles for himself?

  • DJE is an exceptionallly handsome man and I think roles/characters that need/use this quality/gift of his suit him best, NOT to use it in a gratuitious way, but in a way that build into the strength of the characterization. So, roles like the strong hero, or the romantic lead, the debonair scoundrel, the 'dreamboat' in a romantic comedy.   • for the experience of it, I would love to see him in a theatre production. The selfish side of me wants him back on regular series TV (which he recently said that he would do again). In what role....hummmm..... that is hard to do without using examples.......but I think something that gave him the space to show his dramatic side, as well as the light comedy side.............maybe with some 'pace' to it as well. As for what is 'beneath' him.....I am not sure I am qualified to make that call. I guess for me, as long as HE is good with it, then so am I.   • Gee Barbie, I should have posted my comments, here, the other day, shouldnt I? These are my personal preferences and we all have them, this is just me. First, he's a man with a life and a family, it goes without saying that they should be considered first. I'd just lke to see him in a role similar to Jimmy Conlon, Terry Evenshen, someone who is' real,' a few flaws, but generally a good man, with lots of history to learn about in his back ground, through out the season, if its a series. (Thats what was so frustrating about Jimmmy Conlon, we didnt get a chance to know him). I want a hero, or at least someone to look up to, someone courageous, the kindest and best of men.....hmmm...that wouldnt hurt my feelings but then we'd be back to Harm, (heavy sigh,) and he doesnt weant to go there.(sorry, I had to put that in, I couldnt help myself) BUT SERIOUSLY, he could portray any 'unsung' hero in or out of uniform and I'd believe it.
