Subject: More common an issue at most schools
In reply to: Serious question, there is having a good teacher / dancer relationship 's message, "When does the line between pupil and teacher relationship get crossed ?" on 16/04/25 15:03:49, Wed

I think line gets crossed more often than not! Once a teachers steps out of their role even for a minute because a child is sick or doesn’t do as well as the TC or DD hoped.

I observed two teachers from a small school and every time I spotted them they were with a DD and parent who was not dancing that day. I initially thought they were related and when I passed comment on this to a mom from our school she informed me they weren’t related but always hang out at feis together. She had witnessed it a few times in the run up to worlds. Sometimes DD is sitting in between the two teachers during a feis and while they prep dancers to go up on stage or are receiving feedback post dancing. This is bad practice. This should only be between the DD and TC’s. Am sure this gives the child a bigger sense of importance within the school and also blinds the teachers when it comes to bad results. They are too emotionally invested in the DD, they are no longer impartial. Our TC said they were actively looking for feedback on the DD from other TC’s and they couldn’t understand why the DD had such a bad result earlier in the week. The impact this has across any dance school big or small, it can be catastrophic and create animosity among dancers. If TC’s want the best for their schools and DD they need to remain just that, the teacher and not friend. The boundaries have to be clear from the outset.

I think MF has tried to defend MC from the haters on this forum but he should have chosen a better choice of words or in fact maybe not posted at all. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! She is a fabulous dancer and I hope she feels better soon 🤕
