        Just reading all the Midland Quals comments and though what a refreshing change to read all positive about the event and the dancers,wish my dd danced in this region lately there has been so much negative from nearly all the Qualifying events just think it's lovely to hear nearly all good!!!         Midlands is an exceptionally good region to dance in. Some great ol timers, many who have known each other most of their lives. There is a code of conduct which prevails, call it decency or whatever but very proud to be from this region. (NT) -- midlander, 7/12/09 14:18:51, Mon

I think some people need to keep nasty comments to themselves. Teachers have a hard job without suffering unnecessary abuse from ex pupils if you have physically moved on try and do so emotionally too and dont try and create trouble .

I heard a 'rumour' about how a former tcrg was supposedly treating an ex student and found out later from a reliable source that it was simply wrong and an attempt to slate the old teacher, just because she could. I know it does happen but if you hold your head up high, continue to smile and say hello, they will let it go in time. Always take the higher road. rules on grading and who can dance -- curious, 4/12/09 22:52:55, Fri [12]
hi is there any official commision ruling on going back down a grade in new year when age groups change in january when a dancer has won that grade in her old age group.

- It differs from region to region so best to check with your teacher or regional council in Scotland once you move up you have to dance in that grade for a full 12 months before you are eligible to move back down. (NT) -- Hth, 4/12/09 23:51:47, Fri
- Once you win Bun or Tus grad grades you can never go back down to them ever again. If you win Mean(Intermediate) grade you can dance that grade again the following year beginning January as long as it is up an age group. However if you become Ard (Open) Dancer you can only go back to intermediate after 2 years of not winning in tha dance and you teacher has to apply to its regioal council to have the child re-graded.   - why would you want to down grade from open to inter (NT) -- its not going to improve you dancing against a weaker group, 5/12/09 19:39:10, Sat
- Winning a Mean Grad competition makes you Ard in that dance but for some people who never make it in Ard, they have a option to go back to Mean (after 2 years of no winning) where they may be much more succesful. Some dancers will just never be an Ard dancer no matter how much work they put in. You would be amazed abot the number of kids that regrade afte the 2 years of not winning in ard. .You'll often fid that by regrading the children begin to won again very quiclly and this gives them a boose of confidence when they do go back to Ard. - we dance mean grad at start of each year- my daughter then dances ard for dances she has won, or dances open championships-however never really placing at this level. By the end of a year she will still have a few dances in mean grad and a few in ard grad. Shen then dances mean for all dances again. This gives her a boost and helps confidence. Not ID related but in view of helpful replies to enquiries about a visit to Glasgow. Wondering if any locals or experienced visitors cld give any advice on Dublin and what to do during a visit week leading up to Christmas. - I think if you read the post properly it is obvious the poster is asking about Dublin. No need for sarcastic comments. To the OP there is loads to do, an open top bus is fantastic. I would advise going on this on a Sunday (less time stuck in traffic). Malahide Castle is lovely, or take time out to go to Dublin Zoo. Just looking through results sheets from recent qualifiers. When is the judging system going to be overhauled. The current system is geared towards top scoring dancers. After the top 10 or even the top 5 the marks are crazy. So many ties. Totally ridiculous. Ties shouldn't be allowed at all in results, or at least no more than a 2-way tie. Tieing up to 5 dancers is a joke and just goes to show the bare seconds adjudicators get to write down a dancer's marks. If you are not a top placing dancer you could end up with any kind of crazy marks. It is a farce. Does anyone on these Commission committees have enough bravery and brainpower to overhaul this system.       - The ties can only happen when the three 'raw marks' are added up to come up with the overall 'grid' mark. No-one can pre-determine how all the nine marks (from all 3 dances) are going to pan out. That is not laziness its just the way the cookie crumbles and coincidence. However if you are talking about 'raw marks' then when an adj gives loads of dancers the same mark, then that can be construed as being uninterested in only the top lot and the rest all get 76 or whatever. This is more apparent in a major I think (NT) -- 3 X 78 = 234, or 79+78+77 = 234, or 77 + 77+ 80 = 234............. you see these could be Raw marks from 3 different dancers and therefore this would be a 3 way tie. All the kids danced the championship regardless of age, standard etc, and every child got a huge trophy at the end, whether you were the Novice Champ, or Open Champ. There were also awards for best student, best behaved student, etc - it was always a wonderful day. Entry fees Didnt cost much either. The Good Old Days!         No, they don't have to be. But I've danced for two schools and neither of them ever used a non-ADCRG for the class feis as my teachers felt it was important for us to be judged by someone qualified. The judges have to be fed, watered and accommodated not to mention travel expenses as well. Plus most class feiseanna hire a real musician, ours hired a photographer to video all the kids dancing since it's not allowed at open feiseanna, and hiring a suitable hall still costs money even if it's "just" a class feis. - Just to point out that the import duty can be totally random, they can't possibly tax everything!!! That was what I was told by a Customs and Excise guy. In this case you've been, sadly, unfortunate. BUT that is NOT your fault or really YOUR problem. This buyer should suck it up and accept that this is the law of her country and she has to pay the duty. I know it's not good for her especially this close to christmas, but if she wants the dress, she has to pay. This has been a question on my mind for a while now my DD is a very talented dancer but she dances with a small non political school and has'nt been doing as well as she should do at feises because of the politics in ID.Her TC even told me she would be in top 10 in worlds if she was with another school.But the real problem is, is that my DD absolutely adores her TC and cant see a bad bone in him.Im just wondering what you think is more important the success of your DD/DS or to stay in the same school and DD not doing as well as she should do because of other political schools?I want DD to be happy but I also want her to get the places she deserves and works sooo hard for.

- It's not just your child. There's a lot of under-recognized talent out there all around the world. If every child that could be Top 10 went to the "right" schools to get the "right" favours, there'd be well more than 10 in the Top 10! - Here, here. My DD was one of the children who got her pic in the IDM this month. She was absolutely thrilled as she is not one of the top dancers and so never gets' picked ' as she puts it. It shouldn't always be about the champs as they have lots of opportunity to see themselves on websites, magazines etc in result photographs, whilst the lower placed dancers are often left out of these. Please photographers, give a little thought to the 'others' when choosing what pics you use for advertising etc, after all the dancing ability doesn't make them look any better on a photograph.   - Think it is entirely possible that readership has dropped off. Featuring USA dancers, upcoming dancers, etc may well be their market now. And yes, boys are way under served in IDM.   - It's quite depressing for me personally as although I am not a competing dancer anymore, I'm still involved in the dance scene. I also consider myself to be a decent writer and know for sure I could do a better job than some of the current "journalists" on the staff, but any vacancies are never advertised to the readership or to the ID community so they never end up with real dancers on the staff. Working in PR I know that most editors of "trade" type magazines are people who have worked in the field for their entire lives so why IDM should be any different is beyond me. I am debating whether to take the full family to Worlds this year. I have non-dancing young (9 and 6) year old children and was wondering if there is anything for them to do in Glascow.

Looking for trains for day trips between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and I'm seeing good fares on a sight that say "C2C" and "National Express". Is this a reputable train service on which I could safely prebook tickets for March, without any worries?
