In Brazil the close contact is essencial in every kind of situation, friendship at home, at work and so on...
Brazilians are very friendly and opened to help, just the opposite of americans that are very competitive.
If a person is not prepared or prefer to live with parets, it's not a shame, it's very commun, especialy for those sons that are single and in some cases the son marry have children and he continue living in parentes' house.
