Young Democrats’ Leader Locked Up For Kiddie Porn

ALBANY—The outgoing president of the Albany County Young Democrats has received a 57-month sentence in federal prison for possession of child pornography.


Benjamin L. Jakes-Johnson, 29, of Albany and formerly of Troy, was sentenced by U.S District Judge Lawrence E. Kahn in Albany on his guilty plea. He was also ordered to serve a lifetime term of supervised release, have no unsupervised contact with minors, participate in a sex offender program and register with the New York State Sex Offender Registry Program.


Jakes-Johnson is still listed at the executive vice president of the state Young Democrats.

The court also ordered that various computer equipment be forfeited to the federal government.

On Oct. 3, 2005, Jakes-Johnson’s computer and two computer disks were recovered. Forensic examinations of these computer and computer disks were subsequently conducted. Approximately 81 still images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and one video depicting such conduct were recovered from these computer and disks. Said images depict individuals under the age of 18 engaged in sexual acts.

Many of these images depicted prepubescent minors, including toddlers.

When interviewed by law enforcement officials on Oct. 3, 2005, Jakes-Johnson admitted that he used the Internet to visit websites offering child pornography. In addition, he acknowledged that he has traded child pornography with other individuals.
