Synopsis of Town Hall Meeting June 4, 2019

This was suppose to be a community involved meeting to discuss the future plans for the repair and re-design of Meandering Road. On the tables walking in were the plan concepts for Meandering Road, which includes three roundabouts. One in Fort Worth, one at Yale, and one at Roberts Cut Off. Although the big sale job seemed to be more pointed at the roundabout on Yale and Meandering. The roundabout in Fort Worth is being built so big rigs can make it around without climbing the curbs. The one at Yale and Meandering will have sloped curbs so school buses and big rigs can get around it. The current plan includes a six foot wide sidewalk on the south side of Meandering and a 10ft wide bike path on the north side of Meandering. The sidewalks which are usually are paid for by the homeowners, and a requirement for this project, is being paid for by the state. Still your tax dollars. Each road approaching the roundabout will have dividers as you get close to the roundabout. Each divider will have a cut out to allow pedestrians to stand in if needed during high traffic times. Time frame for this project will be over a year, maybe longer as stated.

Questions about property acquisitions were brought up by citizens in the crowd. The statements by the officials were very cloudy. They stated there would be some need in certain areas, but they were not clear as to where and that most of the land being taken is city right of way. Also a question about the utilities being moved to accommodate bike trails and sidewalks which really seemed to throw the presenters off balance. Their statements were the bike trails or sidewalks will not veer around utilities, that the utilities would have to be moved, but they will have to check with the utility companies first. The presenters from COG could not answer for sure whether the road would be concrete or asphalt. This would depend on the money available for the project.

A member of the base spoke of his wish for the sidewalk and the bike trail for the service men and women and their families serving on the base.

Then our mayor spoke in a very stern and demanding voice that this is a needed project which has been going on for two years and we need to quit nit picking it and move forward on the project, He also stated if we keep dragging our feet on this project we could possibly lose the base. Darren Houk was the only council member to speak up. His issue is with this plan constantly changing every time he talks to someone. He was also the one who brought up the utilities. I questioned who pays for the side walks and if there was a divider to end the left turn lane coming up or going down Meandering. Gordon Smith was suppose to speak at the end of the meeting. I guess it ran long trying to force sell us on this project which is already a done deal. After the meeting I questioned him on the gas pipelines in our city as to whether they are going to be replacing them too since they're tearing up the streets for the water lines, He stated they are currently looking into this so hopefully we will have an answer officially soon, My reasoning for asking is gas pipelines have been in the news pretty regular.

Don't forget Saturday, June 8th is Election Day (7am-7pm) and your last chance to vote in the Runoff Election for River Oaks City Council Place 1. I would appreciate your support and vote. Johnny
