REQUINTINA August 22, 2009, 8:16pm All is set for the most prestigious beauty pageant, the 2009 Miss Universe contest, which will be held at the Imperial Ballroom of the Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas Sunday night (Monday morning in the Philippines). There are no clear frontrunners in this year’s contest, but Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo is one of the favorites to win the coveted cape, scepter, and crown, experts said. “Let me start off by saying this year would probably be the hardest one to pinpoint a clear winner from the get go. It makes it more interesting and it’s anybody’s game. I have carefully assessed all more than 80 plus delegates, and only these 30 girls I see make it,’’ a missosology beauty expert said. Among those predicted to make it to the Top 15 are candidates from Kosovo, France, USA, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Russia, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Japan, Ukraine, Slovak Republic, Indonesia, Philippines, Belgium, and Jamaica. A beauty pageant expert, however, predicted Miss Kosovo to win the crown. But an American bettor said Miss Australia is the favorite to win the pageant. Venezuela’s Dayana Mendoza is the present holder of the Miss Universe title. If Manalo makes it to the Top 15, it will mark the end of the 10-year drought for the Philippines in the contest. The last time the Philippines made it to the semifinals was in 1999 when Miriam Quiambao won first runner-up honors. The United States holds the record for the most number of winners, with seven. It is followed by Puerto Rico and Venezuela with five each. The Philippines has two winners. The 84 contestants were judged in three categories – in swimsuit, in evening gown and interview – during the preliminary rounds. From there, the judges selected the Top 15 delegates, whose names will be announced on Sunday night. Organizers said before the pageant night, the last few days for the contestants were spent on rehearsals and a grand parade in the Bahamas. During the pageant night, the winners for Miss Photogenic and People’s Choice Award will also be announced. The public can still vote for their favorite candidates through the Internet. The Miss Universe organization has announced that this year’s judges are Dean Cain, actor and producer who is best known for his TV portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman; Colin Cowie, author/television personality/designer to the stars; Gerry DeVeaux, award-winning producer, songwriter and style guru; Farouk, founder and chairman of CHI Hair Care; Heather Kerzner, philanthropist and ambassador for Kerzner International and its many resorts, including Atlantis, Paradise Island;Richard LeFrak, chairman, president and CEO, LeFrak Organization; George Maloof Jr., professional sports mogul and hotelier; Valeria Mazza, international supermodel; Matthew Rolston, leading photographer and director; Andre Leon Talley, award-winning writer and editor; Tamara Tunie, actress, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"; and Keisha Whitaker, fashion maven and founder of the Kissable Couture lip gloss line. In 2nd place was the costume of Miss Nicaragua, Indiana Sanchez, and in 3rd place was Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej. Although the Costume competition had been held last Monday at the Wyndham Theatre, the results were announced during Thursday’s Charity Auction. This marks the third time Panama wins this award, the other times being 1986 and 2004. Congratulations! |

With 18 days to go before the crowing of a new Miss Universe, all of the contestants competing in this year’s pageant are now in The Bahamas. The final contestant to arrive was Miss Zambia Andella Chileshe Matthews who came in just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Hers was a relatively quiet arrival, particularly when compared to that of Miss Philippines Bianca Manalo who arrived late Monday night to much fanfare. A large number of Filipinos residing in The Bahamas stayed up late to catch a glimpse of their queen as she arrived at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort. Despite traveling for more than 24 hours, Bianca was simply radiant – her spirits boosted by shouts of “Mabuhay” from her fellow countrymen. The gathering represented members of the Organization of Filipinos living in the Bahamas. Bianca said she’s looking forward to the Miss Universe experience, and seeing so many familiar faces helps. She revealed that this was her first time traveling alone and she didn’t know what to expect, but she certainly wasn’t expecting the kind of welcome she received. She said she’s very happy to see so many Filipinos here in the Bahamas waving their national flag. The contestants will make their first public appearance on Wednesday when a group of them will take a walk through the Ardastra Gardens, famed for its marching Flamingos. While there, they will spend a few moments with the residents of several children’s homes. Their next stop will be the historic Fort Charlotte - the largest fort in Nassau – for a photo op. The ladies will then have lunch at the colorful Compass Point Restaurant before making their way to the Dock Boardwalk of the Sandals Resort. Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza arrives Wednesday afternoon, officially kicking off the pageant. After watching the delegates arrive over the past few days, these are the contestants who have caught my eye so far (in random order): Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Jamaica, China, Philippines, France, South Africa, Russia, USA, Netherlands, Japan, Kosovo, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, Iceland, Albania and Belgium. This is not a prediction list, as I’m sure it will evolve as the pageant progresses and I see more of the contestants in action. However for me, these are the delegates who have hit the ground running. But as we all know, when it comes to pageantry the race is not to the swiftest. Host queen Kiara Sherman checked into the hotel on Monday, and I’ve been informed that she is rooming with Miss Japan. There has been much debate over whether Kiara can give the Bahamas its first Miss Universe placement. One thing for sure is that she has drastically improved since winning her local title, at the hands of coach and stylist Bobby Ackbarali who has an enviable track record in preparing queens. The question is, can Bobby’s winning formula help Kiara to crack the semis, especially in such a competitive year? |

See, contenders from nations that actually have "national costumes," like Japan's kimono, generally wear them at some point in the competition, and Miyasaka isn't rocking that boat. However, her take on the kimono is a little different...the kimono ends after a short little ruffle of a skirt under the kimono, leaving her neon pink panties, garter belt, and thigh highs well displayed.  Many Japanese nationals think the design is super tacky, and more porn star like than classy. While I find the design sexy and innovative, in the context of Miss Universe I'm kind of forced to agree...although it's twice as hot when she puts on an oni mask. Rawr. (It's not the first time a Japanese entrant has worn something a bit on over the top; a couple of years ago the Japanese rep was wearing a strange samurai getup, with armor, but no underclothes, and a sword. But at least that was kind of badass...) |

That seems to be the general consensus on the Merlion-inspired gown that Ms Shenise Wong, 26, will be wearing to the Miss Universe grand finals in Vietnam next month. Designed by 18-year-old Muhammed Hafiz Tahir, a fashion student from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, the dress features "scales" made from PVC, plastic crystals and a puffy organza tail. A tall and elaborate hairdo, which is decorated with scallop shells, completes the ensemble. The costume has raised a flurry of mostly unfavourable comments on local online forums HardwareZone and Stomp. Many highlighted the costume's atypical look and the odd choice of using the Merlion as a source of inspiration. HardwareZone member Nitrile called the dress "super unflattering... (and) it doesn't even highlight a woman's curves". However, Stomper BuckteethLCL said: "Hafiz is a young and aspiring designer. Let's give him a chance to express his ideas through this national costume." |

But instead of holding a national pageant, the organizer handpicked their candidate. Belgica Suarez was lucky to be chosen. For getting the title of Miss Honduras Universe 2009, 23 year-old Belgica will be going to Bahamas to compete for the 58th edition of the pageant. Belgica said in an interview that "at this moment of crisis in Honduras, it is her responsibility to be an ambassador of culture and awareness of the positive aspects of her country." The 5'11" tall beauty queen was last year's First Runner-up at the Miss Honduras Universe. The scheduled Miss Honduras Universe 2009 on July 25th was cancelled. |

Andreas won the audience's vote which decided the winner of Mr. England on the night of the Miss England final where Rachel Christie won Miss England. Chris Mulvaney who hails from Bolton came in second place and Hare Dhami from Birmingham came in third! Andreas has has Cyprian roots and has played football professionally for Cyprus for under 17's-18's!. He hails from Rugby. In preparing for the pageant, Manalo said she took language courses, reviewed Philippine history, geography, economics, and arts and culture, and brushed up on her knowledge about the Bahamas. The beauty queen has also undergone on-cam training, like hosting and angles, plus hair and make-up lessons since she will have to do her own hair and make-up during the Miss Universe pageant. Manalo is a sister of Miss World semifinalist Katherine Manalo-Hernandez. Their aunt is former Miss Philippines International Nini Ramos Licaros. She has been taking part in humanitarian missions to uplift the plight of poor Filipinos, and improving the morale of the country’s wounded soldiers. She also finds time to take part in community-based projects. “I am very thankful that my family has always been blessed but I’m also concerned about the plight of the poor families in our community.” “Before I joined Bb. Pilipinas, I’ve always been happy to volunteer for Gawad Kalinga in building houses for the poor, joining medical missions and participating in our community’s feeding programs,’’ Manalo said. When she competed in the 2009 Bb. Pilipinas pageant, Manalo also won special awards such as the Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Award, Miss Natasha, Miss Philippine Airlines, and Best in Swimsuit. Prior to the competition, Manalo stood out in cheerleading during high school and college. She also dabbled in modeling when she was 14 and also tried her hand at TV hosting. I’m going to the Bahamas on August 1 to participate in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant. I have nearly completed everything. I only need to pack my things and set off. My clothes for this trip will include ao dai designed by ABC ao dai fashion and a dozen night gowns and modern fashions by designer Cong Tri and over 20 sets of clothes of my own, totalling nearly 40 sets. Foreign language, particularly English, has been the weakness of Vietnamese contestants at international pageants, how about you? I believe in my English because I have studied English since I was a little girl and it has improved so far. Communication is often a weakness for Vietnamese contestants so they can’t show themselves off. I see my English as my forte in this pageant, and it will help me to win people’s sympathy. |

Rudyeva won the Miss Russia pageant in March. But soon after she was crowned Russia’s most beautiful woman, an old erotic photo session featuring her appeared on the Internet. The situation was especially controversial as at the time of the photo shooting, made for an international adult magazine, Rudyeva was only 15 years old, although she already possessed an enviable figure. Organizers of the beauty pageant questioned the appropriateness of Sophia’s participation in the world beauty contest, saying that millions of girls worldwide look up to beauty pageant winners, and you can’t expect a child porn star to set a positive example. Rudyeva responded to the debates in the media in an open letter, in which she apologized to everyone she had upset. She blamed dishonest managers and photographers for tricking her into the illegal photo shooting, and vowed that if she wins the Miss Universe title she will use her influence to prevent young and silly girl models from repeating her mistakes. Controversy notwithstanding, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported Thursday that Rudyeva is going to the Bahamas in August to represent Russia at the Miss Universe contest. “I am now getting ready for the contest,” she told the newspaper. “I’ve been taking part in charity activities, took yoga, fitness and singing classes. I became the face of three world-famous brands, such as Philip Plein. I am very confident of myself.” |

Date Posted: 23:31:16 07/17/09 Fri   If asked to Gabrielle Walcott will not represent Trinidad and Tobago (TT) in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant which takes place in the Bahamas next month. There is just not enough time for either her or any other woman to prepare for the internationally popular beauty competition, said Walcott, the third-placed winner in the Miss World 2008 pageant. “I understand girls have to be there in the Bahamas in the next two weeks. I would never do myself or our country that injustice or disservice. How could I be prepared in just two weeks?” Walcott told Newsday. Several broadcast media reports over the past two days claimed Walcott was expected to be approached by the Government to represent this country at the pageant. TT has had two winners at Miss Universe, Janelle Penny Commissiong in 1977 and Wendy Fitzwilliam in 1998, along with a string of semifinalists in recent years. Giselle La Ronde won Miss World in 2006, and again, this country has had successful runner-ups in this competition. In 2008, Anya Ayoung-Chee represented the country in the Miss Universe in Vietnam, while Walcott went to South Africa for the Miss World competition. Ayong-Chee did not place among the semifinalists but Walcott placed third, and even won the Queen of the Caribbean prize. Walcott denied the media reports and said no one from the Government had approached her to be a possible delegate to send to Bahamas. Even so, Walcott said it would be too late for her to get ready to compete. “I think it’s just too late to be properly prepared. Our girls have done well at that competition before and I don’t want to be one to spoil that record.” Former pageant trainer Allyson Brown, who has previously helped past delegates to both beauty competitions, was also in the dark about Walcott or any other woman being selected for Bahamas. “I did not hear anything. I have absolutely no information whatever on that,” said Brown. According to Miss Universe Inc, 86 countries have already confirmed their attendance with this country listed as a withdrawal along with Antigua & Barbuda and Sri Lanka. That this country would be without a delegate at Miss Universe and possibly Miss World 2009, stemmed from the previous struggles of former franchise holder Peter Elias to obtain consistent support from the Government and the business community. In 2007, TT did not take part in Miss Universe because of lack of funding, and afterward Government stepped in and supported Valene Maharaj’s entry to Miss World 2007 where she placed third. Elias could not be reached for comment yesterday. However, after Walcott’s success at Miss World last year, Elias stated that he was giving up the franchise for both competitions. |

Kim Joo-ri, who entered the contest as Miss Seoul, was crowned Miss Korea at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Seoul. The 21-year-old looked surprised when Chang Jae-ku, the chairman of the Hankook Ilbo Media Group, finally announced her name, but she smiled as she was crowned by former Miss Korea Na Re.``I am so happy and I thank everybody who has been cheering for me. I'm happy, but I believe this means I will have to try harder to uphold the Miss Korea spirit. I promise I will do my best,'' Kim said. |

She will be representing her country at the Miss World 2009 pageant that will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa and in London. First Runner-up was twenty-two year-old Lidija Kocic who entered the pageant as Miss Belgrade. She will be representing Serbia at the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. Last year's First Runner-up, Dragana Atlija, will be the one who is going to Bahamas to compete at the 2009 Miss Universe at the Paradise Island. Named Second Runner-up was Jovana Bisevac. She will competing at Miss Europe 2009. |

The 58th Miss Universe pageant will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas, on August 23, where 86 countries and territories will compete for the title and the pageant. The 20-year-old Ntelamo from Katima Mulilo in Caprivi clinched the diamond-studded gold crown after a panel of nine judges unanimously voted her as Miss Namibia 2009 last month. Ntelamo needs at least N$100 000 for each of the pageants. Miss Namibia pageant organiser, Connie Maritz, said on Tuesday they are doing everything possible to raise funds to send Ntelamo to Miss Universe. Maritz said Ntelamo herself is spearheading the campaign to raise money for the pageant, with one of the events being a gala dinner scheduled for July 25, to which companies and individuals are being asked to book tables to fund the trip. “She is such a beautiful girl and it is a beautiful representation for Namibia at international level,” she said. In the past, the reigning queens also raised some funds, which were supplemented by the pageant depending on the amount raised. Due to the global recession this year, Maritz said there are no funds to give for international pageants. Swapo Party Youth League secretary, Elijah Ngurare, has urged companies and parastatals to avail funds for Ntelamo. Ngurare said the SPYL has learned that the newly crowned Miss Namibia is struggling to raise funds necessary for her to participate in the Miss Universe and ultimately Miss World pageants. He said the reason for the lack of funds was that Ntelamo was black and not white, therefore many private companies were reluctant to support her. “Whatever the case may be SPYL calls on all corporate citizens of our country to make funds available for the youthful ambassador of Namibia. All parastatals of government have the patriotic duty to follow suit,” he said. Ngurare added: “Let it be our national duty and obligation to support our Miss Namibia.” |
