Star Cyprus 2009 was given to Demetra Olimpiou. She will represent her country at the Miss Universe 2010. Demetra is now the third confirmed representative to the 59th edition of Miss Universe after Turkey and Bolivia. (I have written in this blog entry that Lebanon’s Martine Androus was the third one but a switching made her the representative of her country in this year’s pageant in the Bahamas.) |

Date Posted: 22:44:45 07/12/09 Sun May 26, 1999 could have been a date of jubilation and celebration for the Filipino people, and avid Filipino pageants. It has been exactly 10 years ago that Miriam Quiambao, a 24-year old licensed physical therapist and gym instructor, nearly captured the third Miss Universe crown for the country, just to be upset by Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana. That's the last time the Philippines was able to enter the semi-finals. Year by year, Philippine candidates had failed to replicate the success of preceding candidates. Although the pageant-crazy country like the Philippines faile year by year on the start of this millenium in the Miss Universe, the country made impressive performances in other global beauty tilts with several finalists on the Miss World, and victories in Miss International, Tourism Queen and Earth. Will the Philippines end the 10 year drought in the Bahamas? Find out if our very own Pamela Bianca Manalo tries her luck to bring home the crown this August... |

Date Posted: 21:35:29 07/05/09 Sun The 52 hopefuls for the title of Miss Spain were officially presented today before they leave for the Riviera Maya in Mexico on Monday, where one of them will be crowned the most beautiful woman in Spain for 2009. The ceremony was held in the Puerta America hotel in Madrid and was also attended by the Mexican ambassador, Jorge Zermeño, the vice-president of Travelplan, Luis Mata, journalist and competition judge, Javier de Montini and last year's winner, Patricia Rodriguez, who will hand over her crown on July 18th. This is the first year that the Miss Spain competition will be held outside the country and Andrés Cid, the president of the competition, said that the worldwide economic situation had made them move the frontiers and added that it was highly likely that future editions of the competition would be held in other world destinations. The Mexican ambassador was delighted that his country had been chosen to host the competition and hoped that it would 'reinforce the historical, cultural and linguistic links that the two countries share.' He was confident that the Mexican people would welcome the contest with 'characteristic warmth' and that his country would provide an idyllic backdrop for the contest. The ambassador said was pleased that his country had the opportunity "to promote as a tourist destination on the worldwide stage", especially in view of recent events (referring to the recent swine flu epidemic). Javier de Montini, told the candidates, who represent each of Spain's 52 provinces, to 'relax' and be themselves, adding that the way they expressed themselves would be taken into account as well as their physical beauty. Miss Spain 2008, Patricia Rodriguez, told them all just 'to enjoy the experience' and added that her reign had been 'marvellous' and that the title had enabled her to 'travel, become a more rounded person and make a lot of important contacts'. The gala will take place at the Hotel Oasis in Cancún on July 18th. The winner will then go on from Mexico to Nassau in the Bahamas to compete in the Miss Universe contest on August 23. |

After taking the baccalaureate in Chisinau, Diana intends to study at a Romanian University. After a sleepless night caused by last night's nervousness, Miss Italia nel Mondo 2009, Diana Curmei, spoke briefly with HotNews.ro. "When I heard my name and received the crown from the hands of Prince Emanuele Filiberto de Savoia, the jury's president, I was stunned. I could not believe, despite the fact that all of us three Romanian girls were among the favourites. I was proud for my people: I represented the Republic of Moldova, but I consider Moldavians to be Romanians, as well. We're practically brothers. There should not be any debate on the issue", she said. Diana confessed she first called her parents, who followed her with holding their breath: "They're both very proud of me!" |

Subject: Miss Australia 2009 under controversy
Author: Sarah Vogler June 14, 2009 12:00am [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 02:21:39 06/14/09 Sun Sarah Vogler June 14, 2009 12:00am MISS Universe Australia Rachael Finch could be stripped of her title after controversial claims she made about her contract negotiations with the pageant's national director were leaked to the media. Pageant sources say media reports featuring a leaked letter of complaint Ms Finch emailed to the New York head office of the Miss Universe Organisation could create grounds for her sacking. "Under the (Miss Universe Australia) contract, bringing the brand into disrepute is grounds for instant dismissal," one source said yesterday. The 20-year-old Queensland model reportedly claimed she had been pressured by Miss Universe Australia national director Deborah Miller into signing an exclusive three-year management contract. "Please try to imagine what stress Mum and I were under," Ms Finch wrote in her email to New York. "I had not slept in the last 24 hours, was about to speak to an international audience on television and was being told to 'hurry darl'. This was not at all what I would have agreed to if I were completely aware of the points within the Miss Universe Australia contract." The Sunday Mail understands Ms Finch was devastated that the email was made public. It is believed the email was circulated among several media outlets without Ms Finch's permission and she feels she has been used as a scapegoat by parties lobbying for Ms Miller to be sacked. Ms Finch's friends and family yesterday went into lockdown following legal advice not to discuss the issue. Yesterday Ms Miller would not confirm whether Ms Finch was facing the sack over her controversy. "Technically you cannot bring the pageant into disrepute. I just want this resolved in a win-win situation. We have to do the best thing for the pageant in Australia," she said. Ms Miller claimed she had no indication that Ms Finch was unhappy in her role until contacted by journalists last week. The controversy follows a group of emails sent to the Miss Universe Organisation owner Donald Trump complaining about Ms Miller's alleged treatment of contestants and sponsors. They claimed Ms Miller had not honoured contracts and had interfered with judging, allegedly replacing contestants with entrants she felt were more suited to the role. The Miss Universe source said Mr Trump had engaged his legal team to investigate the complaints. One sponsor claimed he paid $25,000 to Miss Universe Australia for Ms Finch to spruik his product. In an email leaked to The Sunday Mail, the sponsor claimed they received little return for their investment, with the product barely getting a mention. Those behind the complaints are calling for an investigation into Ms Miller. The Melbourne-based national director, however, repeatedly denied the claims. Ms Miller said she had no knowledge of the complaints but said allegations she interfered with judging were ludicrous. "Top 10 scores were confidential. Only I have a copy. No one else has ever seen them. The judges were not allowed to confer about choices or show other judges scores," she said. She said she was contacting her lawyers and would investigate the claims before commenting further. Ms Finch's mother Colleen Zablocki, who is recovering from cancer surgery, told The Sunday Mail last month: "My illness and this Miss Universe thing have made me sick to the stomach, to the point that I can't even sleep. "I just wish Donald Trump would step in and straighten it out." |

Date Posted: 22:12:20 06/12/09 Fri Tenzin Choezom, 20, from Dharamsala was crowned Miss Tibet in Dharamsala, India, Sunday, June 7, 2009(Photo: Phurbu Thinley/Phayul.com) Dharamsala, June 7: 20-year-old Tenzin Choezom from Dharamsala, which serves as a base for Tibet's government in exile in north India, wept tears of joy after being crowned Miss Tibet 2009 at the beauty pageant’s grand finale night here this evening. The Chairman of the Spice India Splendour Dr BK Modi crowned Choezom as the new Miss Tibet and presented a scholarship cheque of 100,000 rupees. A panel of four judges elected the new winner, making Choezom the second contestant from Dharamsala to win the Miss Tibet title since it was first started in 2002. In 2007, a 21-year-old Tenzin Dolma became the first winner from Dharamsala. “The first thing I did was to cry. I couldn’t control myself ,” elated Choezom told Phayul.com after winning the title. “From childhood I always have many big dreams for my life, and winning this beauty title is one of my dreams come true,” the new beauty queen who just completed her class 12 said. “Being a miss Tibet for me is like holding an ambassadorial post to represent Tibetan people, and especially Tibetan woman,” Choezom says. Choezom, who edged out three other contenders after going through seven rounds of competitions to claim this year’s Tibetan beauty title, the eighth in a series started since 2002, describes herself as an “ambitious girl”. And having won the title, she says, has given her more confidence and added responsibility to do better and achieve more in life. She says her next top priority is to continue with her further studies and to become a contributing member in the exile Tibetan community. She can speak fluent Tibetan, English and Hindi, and hopes to adopt journalism as her professional career. Ngawang Choying, 18, from Darjeeling was declared the first runner-up and won a scholarship cheque of 50,000 rupees. Dolkar 24, B.Com and Software Engineer from Dehra Dun was the second runner-up winning a scholarship cheque of 25,000 rupees. A conciliatory prize with a cheque of five thousand rupees was given to Yeshi Lhamo, 24, from Bir, in Himachal Pradesh state. Hundreds of crowd packed the venue compound at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPS) to its fullest and cheered in rallying voice, and fire crackers were repeatedly shot into the air creating a spectacular evening show here. “I’m thrilled to see such a great crowd tonight. Thank you for coming and enjoy the show,” Lobsang Wangyal, the man behind the pageant said in his opening statement. This year the Tibetan beauty pageant was renamed as ‘Spice India Splendour Miss Tibet Pageant 2009’ due to its sponsor, Spice India Splendour, which is owned by the the industrialist Bhupendra Kumar Modi. Lobsang in his special message to Tibetan community, said this year’s pageant was a dedication to celebrate 50 years of Tibet on the world stage, which he said was made possible by the hard labour and incredible efforts endured by the older generation of Tibetan exiles. He also asked Tibetans to join him in paying tribute to those brave Tibetans who sacrificed their lives in their fight for justice and freedom in Tibet. Lobsang also said Miss Tibet 2009 was being marked as an expression of gratitude to the government and people of India for supporting Tibetan exiles. “Thank you India for for your help and hospitality,” Lobsang said. |

Organizers of Switzerland’s premier male pageant allegedly forbade André Reithebuch, the current title holder, to attend. Accounts in the Swiss tabloid Blick allege that Reithebuch, a 22-year-old carpenter who has a girlfriend, initially accepted an invitation to attend Europride. However, the tabloid charges, the Mr. Switzerland organization ordered him to avoid the event, expressing fears that his attendance could lead to speculation about his sexual orientation. Urs Brülisauer, a spokesman for Mr. Switzerland, downplayed the appearance of homophobia. "This is not a decision that is to be directed against gays,” he said. Europride organizers, for their part, insist they would be willing to accommodate Reithebuch on his own terms. |

She is a beauty cool under pressure, complete with a saccharine smile, flawless skin and a confident bearing that commands attention. But for one Visayan girl who won in one of the most prestigious pageants in the Philippines, being a beauty queen means beauty beyond skin deep. She said that you can be serious in your attempt to win, but that doesn’t mean that you have to lose yourself in the process and more importantly, you should have more on your mind than the title, the sash and the prestige that goes with it. If these statements are an indication that there’s more to Sandra Seifert’s pretty face, then the lad by all means deserves the beauty queen title of Miss Philippines-Earth. “A lot of people think that beauty queens are all about being pretty and winning titles—that it’s not about the substance or wit of a woman but more about her physical appearance,” Seifert relates to The Manila Times. Exuding a confident aura, the seriousness of her tone is an inkling that she was back on stage to prove something. “In some pageants, that’s true because their intelligence evaluation is only about 10 percent of the total score,” she states, continuing, “The beautiful part is, not all pageants are like that.” Crowned Miss Earth Philippines on May 10, 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum, Seifert bested 49 others as the country’s next environmental ambassador. Seifert succeeded 2008 grand winner, Karla Paula Henry. She will be representing the country in October for the global Miss Earth beauty contest. Seifert had a previous failed attempt at the Binibining Pilipinas title stemming from the issue of her photo in swimsuits appearing in a men’s magazine. She narrates that all these trials sweetened more her Miss Earth victory. “When I was younger, I was fond of watching beauty pageants. I would challenge myself by trying to answer the questions the contestants would get,” she reminisces. During the interview, Seifert was lounging comfortably in a sofa without the trappings of a beauty queen. She carries the laid-back radiance of a 25-year-old girl who was on her way to fulfilling a landmark role in her life. Born Sandra Inez Seifert, the half-European-half-Ilonggo beauty shares that she owes her beauty to the strong German features of her father, Harald, and the tender glamour of her Filipina mother, Zenaida. She reveals that her family encountered some financial hardships in the past but quickly adds that despite the difficulty, she considered them to be very blessed. “I had a pretty good childhood,” Seifert narrates, continuing, “I was really, really pampered. I have three brothers. They are all younger than me but they are all taller than me.” At the age of 14, Seifert was approached by a talent scout who asked her if she wanted to be a model. Though she immediately grabbed the offer, it took her about 50 attempts before she landed on her first legitimate modeling project. Her perseverance was paid off with a promising career. To date, she has already done several national and international commercials and fashion shows. Seifert displays a penchant of involving herself with social issues through her work and through the media. She even worked with showbiz old-timer German Moreno in his late night program Master Showman. To beef up her portfolio, Seifert once posed in a photo shoot wearing a two-piece swimsuit in a bedroom setting. The photo, which was done in good taste, was published in the men’s magazine FHM. Seifert recalls that at that time, she considered those photos no more than a mere attempt to showcase her range as a model, not realizing that it would make a controversial impact on her career. In those days, she is not keen on joining beauty contests even when people were goading her into it. “I wasn’t really up for it. I wanted to just continue going to school and pursue a chosen profession,” she says. Later on, the photos eventually got in the way of her dreams of winning a prestigious beauty contest. Seifert got her degree in Nursing from the City University of New York in the United States. Before getting her license last year, she excelled as a campus leader and honor student. These accomplishments allowed her to be more confident and more knowledgeable regarding communication and advocacy. When she came back to the Philippines, the call to join another beauty pageant again came knocking on her door. She took the plunge the second time around. Candidate number 13 Early this year, Seifert joined the Binibining Pilipinas. “Most of the girls in that pageant were very beautiful—like professional models or beauty queens and the competition was too intense,” Seifert recalls. Despite her popularity as a contestant, controversy hounded the half-European, half-Ilonggo beauty. Seifert was later to be coined “The candidate with the unlucky number 13,” because of her disqualification after the Binibining Pilipinas organizers discovered her past stint with FHM. She was disqualified from the competition days before the coronation night. The pageant organizers stated that the publication of her feature in such kind of magazine made her unqualified to continue competing in the contest. “Since they did it the last minute, it was really a shock for me,” Seifert laments, adding, “I pleaded through my attorneys, for the organizers to reconsider my case because it’s not like I hid it. It’s just that they never addressed it and a lot of people here knew me already so I thought they knew. I am a professional model. I didn’t want to endanger my reputation so I worked with a professional team and the real story is: we just shot for a portfolio. And since the photographer, worked with FHM a lot, they saw the photos and they wanted to release it. If it had been Preview or Mega that saw those photos first, they probably would’ve been the ones to release and I think that that wouldn’t have been used against me. I think they just used the labeling of FHM and the connotation that goes with it.” Seifert had considered the whole affair water under the bridge and had already moved on with her life. She’s thankful because not only that it made her a better person but through it, she learned how many people love and support her. “I heard a lot of inspiring things during the coronation night. I was there and I received my own flowers from people who believed in me and there were some people who even cried.” The Binibining Pilipinas’ rejection of her, opened a lot of doors. It caught the attention of another beauty contest: The Miss Philippines-Earth . A beauty for a cause A brainchild of Philippine-based Carousel Productions, the first Miss Earth beauty pageant was launched in 2001 with the aim of promoting the preservation of the environment. One proud distinction of the Miss Earth contest is that all its contestants are involved with environmental causes and its winners are expected to participate in international environmental projects. The latter caught Seifert’s fancy. “Before I joined Miss Earth, I did my research just to see if I wanted to do this,” she shares, continuing, “Before, people would ask me, ‘Oh did you join Miss Earth for vindication?’ I said no because I didn’t want to waste my time and Miss Earth’s time just to get back at people. That’s childish. I want to do something and to put my time in something I believe in and that would allow me to generate more good.” Fresh from her failed attempt at the Binibining Pilipinas title, she stressed that she was not afraid to join Miss Earth and likewise, Miss Earth was not afraid to have her. That despite her being a former “FHM girl” she could represent the country in the pageant’s campaign for 2009. “When I came to Miss Earth, one of the judges during the screening said, ‘Before anything else, I would just like to tell you that I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what you did at FHM,” Seifert says with a proud smile. “When I joined, I made a promise to myself to do my best and to have more fun because in Binibini it was like a competition every day. You couldn’t value friendships so much because we were placed in situations where you have to be really competitive. I didn’t want to be that way anymore. Instead, I should be genuine about everything.” Like in Binibining Pilipinas, Seifert became a crowd favorite in Miss Earth as well. She showcased her vast knowledge of environmental issues as well as the poised she earned from years of professional modeling. She points out the difference of her experiences joining the two pageants: “I looked younger compared to how I looked in Binibini because in Miss Earth we were encouraged to go for a more natural look. In Binibini, we were made up everyday. I also looked happier and not so haggard because our schedules were more spread out. We got more rest opportunities. Everything was very natural. It was also very soothing. In Miss Earth, we could sit, unwind and act natural. In Binibini, we always had to be so ‘perfect’ and poised even when there were no judges around.” She also notes that being a Miss Earth candidate allowed her to be herself than just being “Candidate No. 13.” “But of course, the competition was just as tough,” she stresses. Seifert stayed focus. Faced with two question-and-answer portions, she took the opportunity to share her cause with the audience and quoted Ghandi by saying “In gentle ways you can shake the Earth.” Beyond environmentalism After bagging the Miss Philippines-Earth title, Seifert believes that there’s still a lot to be accomplished. “I have a lot of plans—short term and long term. I definitely want to raise more awareness in the advocacy that I started with as a candidate in the Miss Earth pageant, which is waste management. During the contest, I spoke about a Republic Act 9003. It exists but only a few local government units, at the moment, are enforcing it. We need to get more people involved. That’s one of the things I wish to achieve during my reign as Miss Earth—to increase the number of participants getting involved in addressing this issue. And since I have access to the media, I would love to start a show wherein we could help raise environmental awareness as well. That would be for my long-term goal. A short term goal perhaps would entail getting a segment in one of the current TV shows.” Seifert also tells of plans with a global scope, “Global warming is still a big issue. I think that even though they have these protocols like the Kyoto protocol, where they try to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by five percent, we don’t really see that much of it yet. People are still burning fossil fuel. I think we need to understand that there is a need to not just focus on the immediate returns of businesses we’ll have. I agree with [President Barack] Obama. We should always encourage people to shift to renewable energy because it doesn’t just solve the environmental problem; it also solves the long-term financial problem.” An avid traveler, she also wants to see more of the Philippines before she represents it on October. And still, she maintains that although her duties are arduous, she will not let it overwrite who she is as a person. “It’s good to be proper, refined and womanly but women should also be like girl scouts, ready to roll their sleeves to work.” Seifert says pertaining to how she willingly went through garbage clean up in an episode of the TV show Matang Lawin. As the reigning Miss Philippines-Earth, Seifert believes that there is indeed a lot of pressing environmental issues but as a “queen” and as a woman, she expresses on fulfilling additional missions. “I want my fellow queens and others who are aspiring for the title to always go for what they believe in and not let anyone discourage them. I noticed that a lot of people who would join this did it just for fun. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but I think that it comes with a responsibility and it comes with an opportunity to inspire people. That’s what I want to achieve: to change the perception most people have of beauty queens.” With that said, it is clear that Sandra Inez Seifert is not just another beauty queen with a saccharine smile. |

Date Posted: 23:46:50 06/07/09 Sun Breaking news now coming to Bahamas Press now confirm that more controversy is spewing out of the Miss Bahamas beauty pageant committee. We’ve just learned that Ife Bethel- Sears, Miss Earth Bahamas and first runner up of the pageant, has relinquished her crown. Bethel-Sears released a press statement to members of the public confirming her decision. Kiara Sherman was crowned Miss Bahamas Universe 2009 under the theme “A Taste of the Bahamas Through Elegance” at the Nassau Wyndham Resorts, Rain Forest Theatre on Sunday, May 25th. The pageant has suffered suspicion in its judging system, where some judges argued against the winner of the event. Bethel-Sears is the daughter of the former Minister of Education and Attorney General of the Bahamas Alfred Sears. Ife Bethel-Sears statement: "I thank the Miss Bahamas Universe Org for the opportunity, the experience has allowed me to challenge myself and strengthen my character. It saddens me that the there are so much controversy surrounding the pageant and the personal goals and achievement of the girls overshadowed by drama. After consulting with the Dean of my school, I have to make choice to deferring my studies for a year or continuing the role of Miss Bahamas Earth and it saddens me to relinquish my title." The title of Miss Bahamas is now offered to her 2nd runner up Amanda Appleyard. |

Date Posted: 23:38:08 06/07/09 Sun A CITY geography student has beaten off competition from hopefuls to be crowned Miss Earth Glasgow. Glasgow University student Sarah Finlay, 22, was named the city's green goddess at the regional heat held in the 29 Club on Sunday night. Now she will compete against five others for the Miss Earth Scotland title with the winner aiming to beat girls from across Britain in Miss Earth UK at the grand finale in London in August. The "beauties for a cause" pageant is a modern take on the event by adding an environmental twist. Contestants showcase their brains as well as beauty and have to understand their country's culture and environment. Sarah, who is being sponsored for Miss Earth UK by McDonald's in Bellshill, isn't in the competition to become a future WAG, model or TV presenter - she really does care about the environment. In 2004 she helped restore a coral reef off Costa Rica with Raleigh International, while in 2007 she worked on a protected game reserve in Kenya where she met Ewan McGregor. Sarah told The Glaswegian: "I was really shocked to win. "Earth UK carries an important message that we should all do our bit for the planet." |

Date Posted: 21:21:31 05/17/09 Sun MOSCOW (Reuters) – Norway won the 54th Eurovision Song Contest early Sunday in Moscow, when singer Alexander Rybak beat 24 other contestants with his song Fairytale. Rybak scored a record 387 points, beating Iceland with 218 points and Azerbaijan with 207 points. It was the third time Norway has won the competition, one of the most watched television shows in Europe every year. "Now Norway is really on the map," said an overjoyed Rybak at the post-tournament news conference. The floppy-haired Rybak, a 23-year-old ethnic Belarussian who grew up outside Oslo, had been the pre-tournament favorite and he wooed the crowd with his singing and violin playing in the final at a stadium built for the 1980 Olympic Games. In an interview with Reuters before the competition started Rybak -- who composes his own music -- said the song was based on a traditional Norwegian fairytale but with a modern twist. Asked at the news conference why he thought he had won, Rybak answered: "In Russia they like nostalgia and melancholy. In Norway we're the happiest people in the world. The mix of them was a success." Moscow was reported to have spent $42 million on the five-day event, making it the most expensive competition in Eurovision's history. As usual glitz and kitsch dominated the show, including dancing Roman gladiators and one performer clad in a blue sequined mask, writhing on the floor. But there was also a smattering of well-established stars. Andrew Lloyd Webber, famed for his successful musicals, composed the British entry and U.S. burlesque dancer Dita von Teese played a supporting role in the German song. Politics also bubbled to the surface of this year's competition. Organisers banned Georgia's entry earlier this year because its song was considered a political jab at Russia, with which it fought a brief war last August. And Saturday dozens of riot police detained gay rights protesters who had defied the Moscow authorities and tried to stage a banned demonstration. Rybak appeared to throw his support behind the gay rights protesters when he said at the news conference: "Why did they (the Moscow police) spend all their energy stopping gays in Moscow when the biggest gay parade was here tonight?" As winner, Norway will host the next Eurovision Song Contest. (Editing by Tim Pearce) |

Subject: Pacquiao arrives home
Author: Inquirer [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 09:44:26 05/09/09 Sat MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 5) Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao defied a raging typhoon and a World Health Organization (WHO) advisory amidst a global virus scare, and arrived home Friday morning to a warm welcome. Pacquiao arrived at 6:38 a.m. on board Philippine Airlines Flight PR 103 from Los Angeles. Clad in a white suit, he was escorted by his wife Jinkee, and the rest of Team Pacquiao, including Bernabe Concepcion who won in an undercard fight before Pacquiao’s title bout with Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas. Sons Michael and Jemuel, and daughter Princess were present at the airport to welcome their father. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Lito Atienza and his son Ali were also there to greet the boxing champ. About 20 airport police K9s and a “light reaction unit” were deployed at the international arrival area, according to Manila International Airport Authority assistant general manager Tirso Serrano. Pacquiao and his entourage passed through the airport’s thermal scanners and were screened by doctors from the Bureau of Quarantine of the Department of Health (DOH). In his arrival statement, Pacquiao said: “Maraming salamat sa inyo, taas noo tayong mga Pilipino kahit saan sulok ng mundo [Thanks to you, we are proud to be Filipinos wherever we go],” addressing hordes of media upon his arrival. Speculations have been circulating that Pacquiao plans to run for congressman in his hometown of General Santos City after the Commission on Elections early Thursday accredited the boxing icon's local political party, People's Champ Movement (PCM), which is expected to bolster his political ambitions in next year's elections. Asked by a reporter about his political plans, Pacquiao answered: “Ayaw ko muna pag-usapan ang politika [Let’s not talk about politics first].” He then gave recognition to the victory of Bernabe Concepcion in the undercard. “Salubungin din natin ng masigabong palakpakan si Bernabe. Alam nyo hindi lang ako ang nagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bansa pero yung mga undercard din katulad ni Bernabe [Let’s also give a big hand to Bernabe. It was not only I who gave honor to our country but also those in the undercard like Bernabe].” When asked why he decided to return early despite recommendations of the WHO and the DOH, Pacquiao said: “Mas lalong makakasama kung mag-stay ako doon. Mas safe kung uuwi ako dito sa Pilipinas [It will be worse if I stayed there. I feel a lot safer here].” “I feel so happy that I’m home now with my family,” Pacquiao added. Atienza said Pacquiao would check in at the Renaissance Hotel in Makati City to rest before heading for Quiapo Church around 10 a.m. to hear mass. In the afternoon, Pacquiao will attend a special event honoring him organized by television network GMA 7 at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. Due to Typhoon Emong, a victory motorcade and a courtesy call in Malacañang have been moved to Monday, subject to Pacquiao's approval, according to Atienza. Upon the recommendation of the WHO, Malacañang on Wednesday requested Pacquiao to reset his flight back home for Monday, considering that he and his entourage would be coming from Los Angeles. The WHO had recorded a “third-generation, human-to-human transmission” of the A(H1N1) virus in the area. But since Pacquiao has decided to return, he and his team should exercise “self-quarantine” for at least five days, according to the WHO, whose advice was sought by the DOH on how to handle the returning Pacquiao and his legion of adoring fans. Atienza said the DOH advisory was “ill-advised”, although he noted he and Health Secretary Francisco Duque III were friends. “Di ko matanggap na patitigilin pa siya sa LA (Los Angeles) at langhapin ang virus. Sabi ni Manny ‘bakit hindi ako pauuwiin, baka mahawa pa ko dito’ [I cannot accept that he (Manny) should stay in Los Angeles any longer. Manny himself said he may contract the virus there],” Atienza said. |

Date Posted: 21:30:16 04/26/09 Sun Friday, April 24, 2009 Kristen Dalton Wants Carrie Prejean To Be Miss USA Newly crowned Miss USA Kristen Dalton of North Carolina apparently doesn't dislike Miss California USA Carrie Prejean for receiving a lot of attention. In fact, Kristen wants Carrie to be Miss USA so that they can be roommates in New York. In order for that to happen she needs to win Miss Universe. Well if Kristen does win Miss Universe, I wouldn't mind it. Although what I would like to happen in this year's Miss Universe is Venezuela making history by winning Miss Universe two years in a row. I'm just a fan of that country. All countries should emulate Venezuela in manufacturing beauty queens. If Kristen wants Carrie to be Miss USA, Carrie wants to be a politician. Carrie recently told Neil Cavuto of Fox News that the controversy made her think about entering politics. Wow you Californians should be proud of Carrie if ever she does succeed in politics. How many politicians out there that look as good as Carrie? |

Date Posted: 01:27:22 04/16/09 Thu MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao wished Oscar De La Hoya all the best in life shortly after the Golden Boy announced his retirement from boxing Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT “I am very happy for Oscar and his family,” Pacquiao said in a statement. “I think he made the correct decision.” Pacquiao, currently the consensus No.1 pound-for-pound boxer in the planet, turned out to be De La Hoya’s final opponent. Pacquiao thoroughly beat De La Hoya last December, handing the Golden Boy his fourth loss in his last seven outings. Pacquiao was humble in victory, telling De La Hoya that he is still his idol shortly after their fight. The General Santos City-based southpaw also acknowledged De La Hoya’s contribution to the sport. “Fighters of my generation owe him a great debt. I wish him nothing but the best,” he said. De La Hoya retired with a record of 39-6, including 30 stoppages. Pacquiao, meanwhile, is still far from hanging up his gloves. He is slated to face British star Ricky Hatton on May 2 (May 3 in Manila) in what could be boxing’s richest fight for 2009. =By Dino Maragay (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com) |

Date Posted: 22:46:12 04/12/09 Sun Scandal!! Naked photos of newly crowned Miss Russia appear on the web A scandal exploded on Russian media. Naked pictures of newly crowned Miss Russia, Sofia Rudieva of St. Petersburg, were found on the internet, in a specialized website called “Perfect10″ which features nude photographs of models. Newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda published a complete gallery of these photos, where the russian queen is fully exposing her breasts. In other photos, she is completely nude. It is still unknown if these photographs can jeopardize her beauty title, or her participation in international contests. Other women with similar photographs competed in Miss Universe: Joyce Giraud (Puerto Rico 1998), Helen Lindes (Spain 2000) and Evelina Papantoniou (Greece 2001) all posed nude and controversies surrounded their participation. However, all three women made the top 3 positions in their respective contests. The Miss Russia Organization will be releasing a statement soon. |

Date Posted: 15:28:09 04/10/09 Fri MAGGIE WILSON - BB PILIPINAS WORLD 2007 Featured as Cover Girl for FHM Magazine- Philippines (March Issue 2009) Interview: This has been a long time coming. Why is that? I think it’s an okay time to finally shoot for FHM. If it were a year or two years ago, I think I would be a little bit too young. I might get violent reactions from people. But there was never any apprehension on your part to do this? No. I’m very comfortable with myself, my body, and my sexuality—or whatever it is you want to call it. I’m very comfortable. I don’t understand it sometimes, but I just love the whole concept of feeling good about yourself, feeling sexy, feeling confident. I don’t see any problems about that so it’s all good. I’m cool. Thanks to FHM site. |
