Subject: visiting Pripyat...

Hello -- I am in scheduling a visit to Pripyat in October and wanted to know if anyone else was planning to do the same, or has already visited and can share their experiences and advice. I've heard many conflicting stories about the best way to visit the city, and hope to gather more information before I book my transportation.

May main questions:
- Is it necessary to acquite a visitation permit though ChernobylInterinform anymore? I've heard that a passport and reason for visitation is enough, but don't want to get there and be turned away.
- Is it permitted to walk around the site without supervision, or does an official need to accompany you at all times?
- Is hiring a personal driver recommended (as opposed to going through a travel agency)?
- Are any of the local travel agencies flexible with their itineraries? Most of the tours that I've found online cover a lot of ground in the exclusion zone, but my main interest is in Prypiat and therefore wish to spend most of my time there.
- Are helicopter tours available?
- The purpose for my visit is for a photo-documentary project I have been working on. Should I keep this information to myself when I go through checkpoints? A couple of threads on this forum mention that guards sometimes expect payment if they know you are there on 'official' business.
- Is it difficult to get around without knowing much russian? I am learning, but certainly won't be anywhere near fluent by October...
- Supposing that I want to spend several days documenting the site, do I need to return to Kiev every evening, or is it possible to stay somewhere closer (or even at the site itself)?

Many thanks in advance for your help!
