9 Chinese fined for illegal marriages, matchmaking in Vietnam
Last Updated: Thursday, January 03, 2013 10:30:00

Police in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho have fined nine Chinese men involved in illegal marriages with Vietnamese women and associated marriage brokers, VnExpress reported Tuesday.
It quoted Can Tho police as saying that three of them were fined VND15 million (US$711.25) each, while the rest were ordered to pay VND10 million ($474.17) each.

They were accused of doing activities that diverged from the purpose stated on their visas for their visits to Vietnam, without having received the permission of related agencies, the news report said.

A report on the website of Cong an TPHCM (HCMC Police) said the Chinese were also ordered to leave the country.

According to Can Tho police, they busted Hoan Cau Hotel in Ninh Kieu District on December 27, and found Hua Xiaole, 37, together with his 22-year-old Vietnamese wife hosting a spouse recruitment session involving six other Chinese men and four Vietnamese women.

All the Chinese, including Hua, entered Vietnam with tourist visas, police said.

Hua told police that he and his wife had arranged for 11 Vietnamese women from the Mekong Delta to marry Chinese men, charging VND20 million ($948.34) for each brokering.

Also that same day police caught another Chinese man, Hao Bin, 42, staying at the same hotel with a Vietnamese woman.

The couple was said to have brokered marriages between two Vietnamese women and Chinese men for a total of VND32 million ($1,500) over the past two months, even though Bin entered the country with a commercial visa, police said.

One day before the hotel busts, police caught Li Guang, a 44-year-old Chinese visiting Vietnam with a commercial visa, marrying a 32-year-old Vietnamese woman at the latter’s home in O Mon District, VnExpress reported.
