Subject: If the dog had 3:3 elbows
In reply to: Jenny W 's message, "Re: Might as well start a new topic for this Jordan" on 13:14:31 11/19/09 Thu

and you really like what the dog bring to the table then what difference does the score make? Does the 3:3 elbows stop her from doing anything or doe it cause pain or discomfort? For centuries these dogs were bred without going to the vet or have hip and elbow x rays yet remained healthy and long lived. Why do we put so much weight on the hip and elbow score if you can still breed bad hips from 2 dogs with good hips?

I spoke to a person about a year ago who had purchased 2 boerboels. One and import from a S.A. breeder and the other from a breeder here in the U.s.. Both dogs were big (over 160 lbs) and strong. The proble was both dogs had mediocre hip scores but the owner maintained that both the dogs were still able to run for hours and hours with no visual signs of discomfort.

The dogs were over 4 or 5 and made him happy as an owner. He wanted to get a puppy not for breeding just as a pet but he wanted to make sure that it had good hips. My question to him was what difference do the hips score make as long as your dog is able to live a pain free life? He couldn't give me a good answer.

Keep in mind that I did not see the dogs run so I can't say for sure that the dogs movement was good. So I can't say that it moved good. But how much is a hip score worth if bad hip can be thrown from good hips and bad hips don't mean the dog cant live a pain free life?
