Subject: Putting the car before the horse

It's rather putting the cart before the horse to test AFTER breeding. How would you have felt if Pluto's hips had come back poor and you had pups in homes showing signs of HD? Not a great scenario for anyone. Testing one dog in the breeding is better than testing none, but testing ALL for EVERYTHING actually opens far more doors for you as a breeder and gives you more factual information to work with. $400 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind, satisfaction of knowing you are doing everything you can AND your reputation as a responsible breeder. Cheap at twice the price!!!

Why did you choose to test the male and not the female?
If I remember correctly, you were given Greit and almost immediately put her in whelp, I think it was this that people generally felt was unwise, breeding before you knew anything about the dog. The lack of testing of both parents didn't help of course. What did her health tests return in the end when you did have her done?

I've seen you speak of Pluto's results, but never any others and I get the impression you are doing some fairly close breedings, so it's doubly important for you, the puppy buyers and owners to know these things, so that they in turn, can make the right decisions for their dogs.

You can also use the information on Pluto's ancestors being all clear ONLY because the breeder(s) tested, don't you owe your puppies owners the same right BEFORE they buy a dog? Shouldn't you be maintaining the same responsible breeding practices that allowed you to own a dog you are proud of and returning the favour to Pluto's breeder by letting him know the results of his breeding? Or do you think you know better than the very experienced guy who bred your dog?

I'm not getting at you Jordan, just trying to get you to see that the way people breed has an effect, not just on them, but ripples out through the breed. Good breeding practices breed better dogs, it's been proven time and time again. You cannot short cut and get away with it for long, it will come back to haunt you (as you well know).

I think you've changed over the last couple of years, at least I hope you have! I don't think you're a bad person at all, I think you care about this breed, but through some of your previous very public opinions and the way you have gone about things, you have gained a bad rep. You've got to do everything right now to change that in the longer term, to be above reproach in order to give you access to the right dogs for your future breeding program. This isn't cow-towing to anyone, it is acting in your own best interests.

Jenny
