Subject: Down Stay with Distractions

Hi,

I originally was going to post this on Casper's Board, but you know what happened! I was out walking with Azaan in the fields on Sunday, when I noticed a duck way off in the distance. I noticed the duck before Azaan did, so I quickly put her on the leash to see if she would heel with the distraction (after she noticed it). All went well. I was very surprised that she didn't try to bolt off or pull me on the leash. I was feeling pretty good with my training at this point, and I wanted to get a picture. Have you ever tried to take your own picture of your dog heeling? It doesn't work!

We continued to walk closer to the duck (goose, whatever). But I really wanted that picture! My only option was to see if I could put her in a sit stay or down stay, move behind her and get the picture. It worked! I am so proud of my girl. She stayed in the down stay position as I took about 20 - 30 photos. The duck was pretty cooperative too as he just tried to cautiously walk (strut?) in the opposite direction without taking off in flight. The photos are a sequence of the sit stay, down stay, the release (pursuit) and recall. After I released her she bolted off after the duck and he flew away and landed back in the middle of the meadow. When she got close to him the second time he took off again into the woods. The last photo is her recall after she chased him into the woods. The recall interrupted her hot pursuit of dinner.

Here is the duck I stumbled upon in the meadow on Sunday. He might be someone's pond duck that got lost somehow? He doesn't exactly look wild to me, but I really don't know much about ducks. We have lots of wildlife where I live, and it is amazing to me how closely I can get up to them to take photos. This photo is zoomed in -- I wasn't really as close as it looks, but pretty close nonetheless.
