For Azaan, it depends on the situation. When playing with other dogs, she never growls unless she is one-on-one with a dog playing tug. I don't allow her to play tug with dogs anymore, as she just gets too physical.

For strangers coming up my driveway, she growls (roars) ferociously and charges towards her "victim". I don't get too many unannounced visitors up here, so I run out the door and call her off. Then I investigate the situation. No one will get out of their car after she does her charging bull display!! Yesterday someone came up the driveway. He was visibly drunk and said he wanted some manure. Azaan wouldn't let him out of his truck, and I didn't call her off since he look suspicious. Azaan continued to growl/roar while circling the guys truck. He finally said "I don't think your dog likes me." I agreed with him, and he left. I don't think he will be back.

For people that are walking down the road, Azaan sits in the front lawn and watches them go by. No bark, no growl -- as long as they are down on the road she is okay with it.

For people coming up the driveway that she knows, she does this high-pitched bark/growl blood-curdling squeal that sounds like a pig in heat. She does the same squeal when she sees a squirrel, deer or other prey item and she is inside and can't get at it. It is the "please let me out now so I can have fun" squeal. She also squeals when the UPS truck comes up the driveway. I introduced her to the UPS guy when she was a puppy, and she knows him now. She can hear his truck when he is coming down the road and starts squealing before he even turns into the driveway. She sounds off this mixture of growl, bark, squeal and snort.
