The gowns are open in the back so that when the patient is lying in bed the nurses and aides can uncover the various parts on the front of the body to provide care, without
disturbing the patient as much as they would if the gown was closed all around the body.

Obviously, the gowns are not made to walk around in. What they will sometimes do, if a patient is to be brought, say, to the lab or x-ray dept., is to put another gown on him,
but this time open in the front. Both gowns then provide full coverage when the patient is not lying on his bed.
