Subject: Triage nurses

My friend Jason had to go to the E.R. the other day because one of his testicles was very swollen and painful. He said a woman who called herself a Triage nurse said she had to look at it before he could see a doctor. He was really embarrassed but finally described his problem to her and she still said she had to look at it first. He kept resisting for a couple of minutes but then because of the pain he finally showed it to her. He said she looked at it closely and felt the swollen side and then finally went to get the doctor.

Does this really happen? Isn't there any way we can bypass the Triage nurse? Are they all different? I think describing it to her should be good enough. Would she think that he might be lying to her for some reason. I don't understand.

I don't care about getting naked for my doctor if I have to. If it wasn't the middle of the night I would have gone to him but this was an emergency. I was already prepared to not feel shy for the E.R. doctor, but I really wasn't expecting to show the nurse first. What gives?
