He played the gay firefighter/restaurant owner who falls for the on-the-lam gangster Vito Spatafore.

A straight man cast as a gay man, after the series ended, the only roles he was getting offered were that of gay characters. A real-life fireman, too, he faced the torment of people thinking he was gay in real life.

Out of depression, he shot and killed himself less than two years after his acclaimed performance on the series.
