In her debut at the National Theatre, she appeared as Prince Charles in "The Royal Family." Sixty-six years later she returned to Washington and made her final stage appearance as Mary Tyrone in Eugene O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey Into Night" at Catholic University's Hartke Theater.

"I liked the idea of a circle being completed," Hayes wrote in her autobiography.

"My career had begun in Washington and it would end there."
