Good quesiton. While there is plenty of evidence to suggest that that the Neanderthal did exist along side homo sapiens, there is no DNA evidence that would suggest that these genes are present in the mpodern form of humanity that we know today. An unfortunate side line that died out.
Why, only God knows and he's not telling. Perhaps these were the folks of Nod who didn't know Cain. Who were these people who would have not known him? Why the protective mark when all the people on the Earth at that time would have been immediate family. Two Gardens of Eden.
More than likely an allegorical tale not meant to be taken lierally.
Some Christian,huh? One foot in Heaven and one planted in the muck. Kind of like when you see the soul depart the human shell while up to your ankles in blood.
