I just found out (the day
>>I posted this message) that for a time the DC Talk
>>song “Jesus Freak” was played on mainstream radio
>>stations. The song first came out six years ago
>>(1996), anybody remember it being played on the radio?

I remember when it came out, I think it was actually late '95. I think I do remember hearing it on mainstream radio, though not very much. But then, I've never listened to the radio much anyways.

>Small correction: “Jesus Freak” came out 7 years ago
>(1995) not 6, and the song apparently was only played
>on a few secular radio stations. “Just Between You
>and Me” though got #12 on Casey’s top 40 list the year
>later (though that song was secular if I recall
>correctly).

See, this is one thing that continually puzzles me: the way we label songs or other works of art "Christian" and "Secular." Many people would say that "Just Between You and Me" is a secular song, because it doesn't overtly mention Christ or discuss an exclusively Christian theme, even though it's written and performed by artists with very publicly Christian world views. Other people would counter that it is Christian specifically because it's by DC Talk.

If David Bowie sings "Amazing Grace," is that Christian Music?

When Run DMC does "Walk This Way," is that Christian Music?

When Amy Grant does "Winter Wonderland," is that Christian Music?

How about the entire U2 repertoire?

Are C.S. Lewis' books, The Chronicles of Narnia, Christian books? Some have said no, in spite of the author's world view and the obvious allegorical context.

What about The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien? A little less obviously Christian, though still containing Christian themes and still written by a Christian author. What about the movies based on the books, made predominantly by non-Christians?

I've come to this conclusion: there is no such thing as Christian music, or Christian art for that matter (or secular art, or New Age art, or Hindu art, etc.). There is simply art, and what it's about. It's almost ridiculous to differentiate genres based on world views. Imagine the freedom we would have if we could evaluate art based on the quality of it's performance or construction, rather than on its content.
