Take your thinking to its logical
>conclusion, and you have a whole society brimming with
>millions of jobs because of the millions of people who
>can't do anything for themselves. At some point, an
>economy is not going to be able to support this.
I totaly agree with this line of reasoning. And as a matter of fact I believe that we are now seeing signs that our econemy is collapsing for these reasons and more.
I used Bob's example from a financial perspective because that is what I am asuming is what you and others are reffering to when the phrase 'contributing to society' is used.
I however do not like the idea of money because it is used as a measuring devise as to whether a person is deemed useful or not. (I explained this later in the post).
Our society values money above anything else. Everything revolves around it and every solution to any problem seems to have a financial solution.
>By your same logic, we should encourage criminal
>activity, since that also creates many jobs which
>would be lost if people stopped committing crimes. We
>should also encourage litter, since people have to be
>paid to clean it up.
To be perfectly honest. Yes. End any of societies problems, crime, drugs, poverty, disease, and it would be an economic disaster. These problems generate billions if not trillions of dollars every year.
Also, how many crimes are overlooked. There are corporations who dump toxic waste into the ocean because it is cheaper for them to pay the fines than it would to properly clean it up. This is one example there are thousands more in every consevable area and problem of society.
>
>Just because something creates jobs does not mean an
>economy wouldn't be better without it.
Again look at the wording, instaed of bettering the econemy, why not better the quality of life for everyone. I sincerly believe that this can happen without basing it on an economic solution.
If your
>mentally ill person can be said to be "contributing"
>to society by creating jobs, then the criminals must
>be praised for their contribution to society as well.
>Are you prepared to say that criminals make a useful
>contribution to society?
And they are. Insurance companies, lawyers, judges, police, security companies etc. praise them entirely, they just will not say it openly. Do you believe that Computer Virus Eliminating companies do not hire people to make the very same viruses that they sell thier product to fight. Or alarm responce companies do not hire people to set off alarms, I personally know of one security company that did this.
Now getting back to mentally ill people like Bob. I really do not have all of the answers. In my own family, my gramdmothers sister, whom i have never met, laid comatose in a bed for over twenty years. Maybe she should have been killed so that she could rest in peace. I do not know.
What i believe is that our society is incapable of providing any sort of beneficial response because these ill bedridden people are more important for thier dollar value than their humanity.
The answer is to determine what is best for these people as individuals, this is hard because each case is different. Plus who desides what constitutes 'impaired enough to die'. My grandma has had four heart attacks since the beginning of the year. But she refuses to die and has the strongest survival will that i have ever seen. Although it is medication that is helping her live. She is in her late 70's is physically unable to work and is living off of a old age pension. I love her and wish that she remains with us as long as possible. Yet when i see her she is always in constant pain. I personally do not know if I could live in constant pain, but I am not her. Some believe that she has overstayed her usefulnes to society and that it is time for her to leave. I am not one of these people of course.
But, what about Bob, our ficticious mentally ill person with an IQ of 20. I do not know. I only believe that the deciding vote should be out of compassion and not finance.
