I just heard a program on the radio about a fellow whose position was that public education actually works to supress individuality, and make kids obedient and essentially mindless.

I've always thought that this position was essentially true. Even at a college level, often times you'll hear students say "He's an alright teacher, but you have to give him what he wants, and nothing else."

There is very little if any debate in the classrooms I've been in. There was always a sense of the answers all being cut and dried. Teachers never responded to questions in such a way as to say "I don't know, let's find out." It was all monotonous.

I'm curious as to what other people on here think. Do you guys think education works to make leaders and critical thinkers these days?
