I think it depends on what your 'crime' was! I was [am] always spanked bare bottom anyway either with mum's hairbrush [very ouch] or, when I was smaller, with dad's hand [big hand - also very ouch].
Only time my dad used a 'weapon' was when he got a switch from a cherry tree and beat me 24 times. This was because I took one of his cars and drove it to the town and I had no driving licence [I was 15 or 16]. I had stripes all over my bottom for some days after that - very very ouch!
