The smoke from the forest fires had barely lifted, but there was something else missing in L.A. on Friday November 14: That something was Paris Hilton, party princess, sexed-up-sociliate, and hotel heiress. The reason for her mysterious disapperance? Excerpts from a tawrdy 45 minute sex tape that had been made public this week prior, starring Paris, 22, and an ex-boyfriend, Rick Solomon, 33.
Paris, whose great-grandfather founded the hotel empire in 1919, was nowhere to be seen at Avalon, the hot L.A. club she frequents, despite the prescence of her usual gaggle of best-girlfriends, Nicole Richie (her Simple Life co star) and Kimberly Stewart (daughter of Rod.) Kimberly, when asked about Paris, barked, "She's Fine!"

Since her return from a two week trip to Austrialia on Nov. 13, Paris has, uncharacteristically, kept out of the L.A. limelight. With the help of family and friends, she seems to be exhibiting a new subdued side in hopes of limiting the conterversy surrounding the sex tape, which has made national news, being discussed and debated in everything from Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor to David Letterman's Top 10 List. In the grainy video-shot in night vision- a fully nude Paris and Rick are seen having intercourse and oral sex. A three-minute version is also widely circulating the internet. "I feel embarassed and humilated, especially because my parents and the people who love me have been hurt," Paris said in a statement released Nov. 17. "I was in an intimate relationship and never, ever thought that these things would become public."

The Blame Game
Although Paris' family has accused Rick Solomon of taking advantage of Paris, his lawyer contends that no crime was committed. The tape, according to Solomon's laywer, was swiped from his L.A. home by his friend Don Thrasher, who then sold it to the internet pornographer Roger Vodocz for an advance of $50,000. Vadocz is now suing Thrasher for $10 million. Rick Solomon in turn, is suing the Hilton family for $10 million for defeaming his character.
Since returning from Australia on Nov.13, Paris, who reportedly stands to inherit $28 million, has been attempting to live a relatively normal exsistence. The day after she returned, the somber-looking socilite lunched at The Ivy resturant, and stopped by Hollywood's Kabbalah Centre. "Never, never has Paris been associated with Kabbalah before," says a Centre atendee. "She probably thought since it worked for Madonna, it might work for her."
However, New York City publicist Lizzie Grubman, a fellow socialite who has known and counseled Paris since they met in 1999, spoke to her on Nov.15 and reports that she "wasn't in good shape" after the scandal broke. "Paris was remorseful and weepy and couldn't believe what she'd gotten herself into - the ugly mess this tape has caused," Grubman tells Star

Damage Control
To help deal with the scandal, Paris' parents, Rick and Kathy Hilton, consulted one high-powered media insider who declined to take on the case after the Hiltons couldn't promise they could get Paris to cooperate. Another source close to Pari says she and her parents had a falling out over the tape, with her father particularly incensed that she hadn't come to him sooner with news of its exsitence, so that he could have tried to stop its distrubion.
Paris had hoped her new Fox Reality television show The Simple Life, debuting Dec. 2, would make her a star, but with the release of this sex video (and reports that almost a dozen more exist, including one starring Paris and Playboy Playmate Nicole Lenz), she's become a house hold name sooner than she thought. Some sources close to Paris allege she's actually optimistic about the notoreity the sex video will bring her, thinking that it might help boost her career.
"I don't believe that Paris is truly bothered by the videotape," says a friend of Paris' and fellow socialite, Lauren Kasey. "When I spoke to her last week, she sounded fine and even joked about it. In the end it only makes her more of a celebrety."

Urban Cowgirls: Paris & Nicole

It’s about time someone made a show with a premise aimed specifically at twisted, bitter guys like us. Fox’s The Simple Life sends two superhot, filthy-rich big-city debutantes to live with an Arkansas farming family, totally cut off from everything (money, cell phones, butlers, their self-respect) and forces them to interact with—gasp!—common folk and mangy farm animals.

Paris Hilton (as in the $3.8 billion-a-year Hilton hotel fortune) and Nicole Richie (daughter of Lionel “Say You, Say Me” Richie) agreed to be the show’s first guinea pigs, sacrificing five weeks of their dream lives for our viewing pleasure. Among other indignities, both will have to take minimum-wage jobs, milk cows by hand, and share bathrooms with a multigenerational farm family.

Why take the challenge? “I think the biggest misconception about me is that I’m this spoiled brat,” says Paris, who threw no fewer than five 21st birthday parties for herself—one each in New York, Las Vegas, London, Hollywood, and Tokyo. “But I’m not. I’m, like, the total opposite.” Though Paris has been known to do anything for publicity, the show’s real loose cannon is Nicole, arrested on a heroin charge a mere six months ago. “I’m really bad sometimes,” she admits. “I’m impulsive and always tempted to do things I’m not supposed to do. So I can totally see myself getting into trouble on the show.”

Still, both ladies have their limits. Paris, who’s bringing racks of designer clothes, swears she won’t kill anything, even a chicken. Nicole draws the line elsewhere. “It may never come to this,” explains Nicole, who’s rumored to have mixed it up in a local bar fight, “but I won’t do anything sexual. Especially with farm animals.”

With the folks at Fox in charge, she should put that in her contract.

Seventeen Magazine - October 2003

Paris Hilton's turn as a farm girl on the upcoming reality show The Simple Life— also starring Nicole Richie, her best friend of 20 years — is just the latest surprise from the 22-year-old hotel heiress and legendary party girl. Contrary to popular assumptions, the perma-tanned blonde has never touched drugs, and Red Bull is the strongest stuff she drinks. She's been linked with heartthrobs and heartbreakers including Leonardo di Caprio and Nicholas Cage, but Paris swears she's a one-man girl who only has eyes for her boyfriend, Sum 41 singer Derek Whibley. And all those rumors about dancing on nightclub tables across the globe? Not true, she insists, pointing out very sensibly that, "Everything would fall off the table if I did that!"

In her cover interview for seventeen's October issue, Paris Hilton proves to be a lot more down-to-earth than you would ever imagine. She may have grown up living at the Waldorf-Astoria, but these days she's more excited to talk about Wal-Mart. Just don't make her milk any more cows.

Why did you want to do this show? It sounds like a huge pain in the ass!

Yeah! I just thought it'd be fun. I've been offered so many reality shows, it took me like a year to decide; I said no to everyone. And then I thought, maybe I should show a different side of me, 'cause everyone assumes I'm like this spoiled rotten girl who couldn't do anything. And I thought, Why can't I work at McDonald's? Or work on a farm? It's something I'll never get to experience ever. So we did it for four weeks.

People want to watch a rich girl like you doing nasty chores, it makes them feel superior. People want to see rich people work, and put you down!

A lot of people told me not to do it, but the show is so good. It definitely took courage to do it. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. But it was worth it, and I really think people are going to enjoy it. Everything was real —we did all that work. Nicole and I worked in a restaurant from 6 A.M. to 5 P.M.. I just laughed through it. And ate a lot! I don't think I can ever eat that stuff again.

You also milked cows. What was so gross about milking the cow, and what else was gross on the farm?

There was crap all over the cows. It was dirty. The smell was so disgusting and there were tons of flies.

Was there anything about Arkansas you liked?

I love Wal-Mart. There were no other stores there. I went there and they had everything. It was so cool. I bought magazines. Food. Makeup. Clothes. Anything.

Could you ever fall for a farm boy?

Yeah. Not now, but I could. I have a boyfriend now. They're really sweet, these boys. They're not jaded like the guys in L.A. and New York. All they know is how to respect women, and they love their moms. They're so polite and nice.

Is it a goal of yours to get married and have kids?

Yeah! In the next few years. I love kids. I think it would be a complete joy to have kids.

You've had a lot of cute boyfriends and you could clearly have a lot more. Is it hard for you when you break up?

It depends on the guy. Sometimes it's really sad. Sometimes I think I won't get over it, and then I do. After a while, usually, I just don't care.

After a breakup, do you hang with your sister and Nicole? Whom do you turn to?

Yeah, I'll talk to my sister. I don't talk to many girls when it comes to guys. Most girls just tell everyone. I'll tell Nicole and Casey [Johnson, fellow heiress] and my sister. We talk on the phone like ten times a day.
