Subject: Question about spacing out marks (more)
In reply to: AD 's message, "Start asking questions, I can help" on 21:41:46 04/08/10 Thu

I sat the exam in Derry and one comment they had for me was that my marks weren't spread out enough in one dance. It was a beginner jig. I think I answered the question ok for them because the first two competitors were marked 10 points apart by me and then the others filled in the middle. They were all the same age group, from the same school, doing the beginner jig. There wasn't a huge difference between them, I have to say. So, when my marks ended up being (can't remember the exact numbers) something like
1st: 76
2nd: 75
3rd: 74.5
4th: 74
etc.
They questioned that. To me, what's the difference? I know you want to avoid ties and I did that. But since the scoring system is just really your own in order to rank the dancers, why would it matter if the raw score is close? And how do you seriously avoid close when you are looking at a very similar standard of dancers all from the same school doing the same steps?
Thanks.
