In reply to: Thank you 's message, "Can someone who has taken the exam walk us through the mini feis? Or (more)" on 18:51:29 04/30/10 Fri

I took the exam in Derry. It was a bit different there because we had to sue an auditorium type theater and we had to have lap boards to write on. So, not a lot of room. Plus the dancers had really small stage to dance on. But basically we all filed into one room and they had a stage set up. There is one main adjudicator judging the competition and then all of us. You watch several competitions with varying amounts of kids in it. We judged 8 I think. From beginner level jig and reel to more advanced grades through hornpipes and treble jigs. We also had to judge a four-hand competition and an 8 hand competition. After each competition you are given a good amount of time to review your scores, make any notes and then turn them in. Just remember that they require ALL of your notes to be turned in. This goes on in the morning for a couple of hours in which you get a coffee/bathroom break. After that, you are free until your interview. This is several hours later. About 30 minutes prior to your interview, you are called up to a room and given your score sheets back. There is a monitor there and you are instructed not to change anything. Just review. Then they bring your in with your panel and you sit at a table and they go through, competition by competition your scores. They ask you who you put in first, second etc. place and then ask questions like why did you place it that way, questions about your comments, lack of comments, anything else you noticed etc. It's pretty intense. Some just ask basic questions and you justify your marks. Some are downright argumentative. For example you answer a question and they reply with, "So you are saying that it's NOT important...." (to your answer saying one thing is important). So, there is a certain tendency to see if you will stand by your marks. Just be confident, write notes that you will understand later but also that you won't be marked down for. (for example, I noted if someone wasn't looking up, more to remember who they were) and got dinged for it later. So, keep comments very dance specific. Good luck.
