ref:http://www.nacion.com/2011-03-26/Entretenimiento/NotasSecundarias/Entretenimiento2726644.aspx

Architecture board topnotcher wins Bb. Pilipinas Universe title -- PFanatics, 08:36:00 05/12/11 Thu [1]

General Santos City-born Shamcey Supsup, the 2010 architecture board topnotcher, was named the 2011 Binibining Pilipinas Universe during the pageant coronation night on Sunday, April 10 at theAraneta Coliseum.

A surprised yet ecstatic Shamcey, who also graduated magna cum laude from theUniversity of the Philippines Diliman, will represent the country in the Miss Universe Pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

"I still can't believe it. Parang panaginip. Kanina nung nag announce na sabi ko it's God's will. If it's for you, it's for you. You just have to believe it," Shamcey said in an interview after the pageant. "Whatever happens, it happens for a reason and God has a plan for every one of us... Ang dami talagang magaganda. Ang dami talagang magagaling. Feeling ko the judges had a hard time choosing the winner for the year."

Asked if she's now feeling the pressure of accomplishing the feat of Venus Raj, who won fourth runner up in the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas last year, Shamcey said:

"I'm not pressured at all kasi I believe I was here for a reason and whatever my destiny is, I'll do my best. I'm just gonna give it my all and I hope that whatever I'm gonna do there [Brazil] yun ang hinahanap nila at kung para talaga sa 'yo para talaga sa 'yo," Shamcey said.

Shamcey bested 39 other candidates in the pageant. Aside from winning the major title, she also won three special awards: Miss Cream Silk, Ambassador of Philippine Airlines, and Miss Talent.

Meanwhile, Iriga native Dianne Necio bagged the Binibining Pilipinas International title and Pasig City resident Isabella Manjon was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Tourism.

For Dianne, it is a dream come true after winning the first runner up plum last year.

"Last year, I joined and I ended up as first runner up and it was talagang pinagdasal ko. Kanina I'm not expecting anything. So I'm just thankful na I will have the chance to compete in an international title... Talagang pag di mo tinigilan yung dream mo, maaabot mo siya and keep on praying," Dianne said in an interview.

Isabella, on the other hand, could not contain her joy in winning the Tourism crown.

"I'm so overwhelmed right now. Sobrang I feel blank. I'm so happy," she said.

Miss Aruba, Gillain Berry -- PFanatics, 08:25:40 05/12/11 Thu [1]

1. Describe yourself in three adjectives and explain why.

2. What was like being crowned as Miss Minnesota USA 2011?

It was a shock! The Miss Minnesota USA pageant was the first I had ever participated in, and knowing full well that many girls who compete in my state run 4-6 times I was taken by total surprise. When you're a rookie you have no idea what to expect. To me this was going to be a fun experience and of course dream come true, but I wanted to be realistic. I was elated to win "Miss Congeniality" and felt so accomplished just f or making the top 15. When they announced my name I broke down crying, the video footage is so funny, you see my sincere shock! After our contract meeting post-c or onation my Mother and I got into the car and just giggled at each other f or at least a minute. Both of us were in such disbelief, of course we knew I could do it, but this was such an incredible hon or . It still feels surreal!

3. What is the proudest moment of your life or most mem or able day?

My proudest moment to date would be landing my first job out of college. It might sound crazy, but finishing school in 2009 made landing a full time job very difficult. When I received that first job offer right after finishing school I couldn't wait to tell everyone. I felt a huge sense of accomplishment and value.

4. Who is your role model and why?

My grandmother JoAnn Herbert is my biggest role model. She is my grandmother on my Mom's side of the family and such a gem. Not only did she successfully raise a family of six, but she has always had at least two part time jobs to supp or t her family. She is such an inspiration when it comes to being a true renaissance woman. She did and continues to do it all. My grandmother is a dedicated, hard-w or king, meticulous woman with the biggest heart. She continues to inspire me as she now takes care of my grandfather suffering severely from Alzheimers. Through all of her challenges she remains positive, hopeful and devout with her faith. It is her complete and utter devotion to God that inspires me most.

5. What motivates you, and why?

I am motivated most by a true challenge. If someone challenges me or questions my abilities I am determined to prove myself. I find daily motivation in my w or k by continuously trying to build on the high standard I set f or myself or even while w or king out, each time I try to push myself that much further. Anything w or th doing is w or th doing well and every time I take something on I doing nothing but my very best.

6. Fav or ites Questions

7. Tough 5 Question

Success is achieving your highest goals without compromising your m or al integrity.

I dislike when people tell me they will "TRY," f or me there is no "trying" there is simply doing. Either you are going to do something or you're not. When people say they will try it shows that they lack of confidence in their answer and theref or e why should I be confident that they will do it? When people ask I say that I will either do it or not, and make it work.

This one is easy. I believe in the United States the only challenge women face today is ourselves. Too many women are quick to judge, accuse, gossip or slander other women. How can we expect others to appreciate and value our contributions to society when we are so quick to break ourselves down? It is the women who supp or t others and w or k to promote growth and development of other women who have the greatest success.

This for me is Miss USA 2005 Chelsea "Cooley" Altman. Bef or e w or king with StandOut Productions I had heard of and admired Chelsea , but since w or king with her and Dr. A.T. Dunn I find her the finest titleholder among an incredible group of women. Chelsea is personally and professionally a huge role model f or how women should act and think. Everything she does, says, and believes in comes from a place of self-confidence, a true love f or people, and a deep conviction to her beliefs. She has helped me grow and develop as a woman and I believe that the way she represented the United States was with such grace, poise and elegance, yet always approachable. Chelsea is the epitome of what Miss USA stands for .

It is easy to place judgement on cosmetic surgery in pageants, but I simply don't see the point. Each of us alters our look in some way or another through makeup, hair extensions, tanning, even w or king out or dieting. Although I personally have never had cosmetic surgery and would not consider it f or a pageant I am not going to pass judgement on the women who do. You want to feel your best at competition and the girl who is the most confident in who they are and the way they look will win.

8. One Question, One Answer

I feel so f or tunate to have grown up in the United States . There is no where else in the entire w or ld where I would have been able to do all of the things I've accomplished in my 24 years. We have unlimited opp or tunities and unlimited access to inf or mation, which is such a blessing.

11. What is the one thing, that people didn't know about you?

I am a maj or technology nerd and even know how to code web and design web sites. I could spend hours on web design drafts, coding and recoding only to start all over. I love reading new ideas and trick online and find myself glued to one of my Mac devices all the time

13. What pageant question was your fav or ite?

My top 5 question at the Miss Minnesota USA pageant: "Women today have a tough choice to make between building a career and raising a family, if you were to choose which would be most imp or tant"

A big thank you to Miss Libby and Miss Britanny, i know Ms. Britanny will rock the usa this 2011...

"Nothing can stop a person with the right mental attitude from achieving his/her goals; nothing on earth can help a person with the wrong mental attitude." -Thomas Jefferson

When Future Productions State Director Denise Wallace announced Brittany Thelemann had won the contestant vote for Miss Congeniality at the 2011 Miss Minnesota USA pageant everyone knew she had come with the right mental attitude. Then moments later when she was named Miss Minnesota USA 2011 it was clear she had achieved her goal. President Thomas Jefferson’s analysis of attitude is exactly the way Brittany tries to live her life.

Growing up in the Minneapolis suburb of Plymouth, Minnesota, Brittany was taught from an early age the importance of attitude, dedication, and kindness.

“Every morning my parents would tell me how much they loved me and give me a big kiss,” Brittany said. “Then my Dad would remind me on my way out the door ‘Be Nice to All the Kids’”.

That simple phrase of ‘Be Nice to All the Kids’ has resonated with Brittany her entire life. The 24-year-old marketing and sales associate and former Minnesota Timberwolves professional NBA dancer, is a true native Minnesotan. She graduated Wayzata High School and was voted “Most Likeable/Talkative” by her peers. Brittany quickly found herself immersed in every activity from the arts, to State President of the business club DECA, the student newspaper, and even lived for a summer is Washington, D.C. as a Page in the United States House of Representatives, all while in high school. Achieving all of these goals and graduating with a class of over 800 students was not an easy task, but Brittany had the right attitude.

“I have always loved being involved, because it made my huge high school much smaller,” Brittany said. “I had friends in every group, but I had to remain really focused and driven to manage the busy schedule.”

Her drive continued in college at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. where she majored in mass communications and journalism with minors in women’s studies and visual communications (graphic/web design). Brittany’s love for involvement had her on multiple executive boards, performing as a featured soloist on an international Italian choir tour, and mentoring young women as a Resident Advisor in the dorms.

“People often ask how many times I ran, or how long I had been doing pageants,” Brittany said. “They are always surprised when I tell them this was my first one, but I think all of my other experiences prepared me.”

Her preparation is now full swing for the biggest stage yet, Miss USA at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. This June Brittany will represent her proud home of Minnesota and compete for the title of Miss USA 2011 with 50 other beautiful, smart and talented women from across the country. The winner of Miss USA will go on to compete at Miss Universe and work under the direction of the Miss Universe Organization as an international ambassador and advocate for the USO, Susan G. Komen for a Cure and many additional philanthropic causes.

Brittany’s goal is to keep her positive mental attitude and remain true to herself.

“I’m just going to go and ‘be nice to all the kids.’”

Great information. Designer lehenga choli has changed the outlook of the Indian traditional dress. Recently I visited the site www.kaneesha.com and ended up purchasing a designer lehenga choli and it turned out to be perfect party wear. Miss Costa Rica, Marva Wright. -- PFanatic, 10:41:23 04/18/10 Sun [1]

24-year-old Marva stands 5'11'' and will represent Costa Rica in Miss Universe 2010 pageant.

Photo: Aldia/Meylin Aguilera

Si te vas a ver mejor, porqué no hacerlo.

Official Statement of Maria Venus Raj -- PFanatic, 22:44:59 04/13/10 Tue [1]

http://adventuresofabeautyqueen.com/2010/04/14/ma-venus-rajs-formal-statement-to-bpci/

STATEMENT OF MARIA VENUS RAJ

In a letter to the Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc dated April 7, 2010 and received by the BPCI on April 8, 2010, I, through my lawyers Atty. Geraldine Marie Berberabe-Martinez, Atty. Dickson Berberabe and Atty. Teodoro Pastrana, have demanded the following:
(1) that I be reinstated as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe within three (3) days from receipt of the letter;
(2) that the declaration replacing me with the 2nd runner up (Ms. Nicollete Henson), be nullified immediately; and
(3) that I be accorded all the rights and privileges appurtenant to the said Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title, including the right to represent our country to the Ms. Universe pageant.

We have maintained in that letter that I do not deserve to be dethroned of my title because I did not commit any misrepresentation. Likewise, I possess all the qualifications and none of the disqualifications prescribed by the BPCI.

On April 10, 2010, BPCI has come out with another statement that “after due deliberation, we have reassessed the situation pertaining to Miss Maria VR and have decided, for humanitarian reasons, that if she is able to obtain a valid Philippine passport, we will reinstate her as the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe”.

I wish to extend my gratitude to the BPCI for reassessing my situation. More particularly, I would like to thank them for saying that they are “hopeful that I will be that Filipina who will represent our country in this year’s Miss Universe pageant”.

However, I would like to emphasize that my reinstatement should not be subject to any condition nor should it be based on humanitarian reasons.

I come from a poor family and integrity is our family’s wealth. BPCI’s previous accusation of misrepresentation has tarnished my reputation and has cast doubt on my right to the title of Bb. Pilipinas-Universe. My family, especially my mother, has been dragged into this undeserved controversy and has caused untold suffering and pain to us all.

In order to clarify matters, I, through my lawyers (Atty. Gigi Berberabe-Martinez, Atty. Dickson Berberabe, and Atty. Teodoro Pastrana), sent a letter yesterday to BPCI requesting that I be reinstated without the additional requirement of a passport. As I had stated in said letter, the holding of a passport was never a requirement for joining, and even winning the Bb. Pilipinas title. And accordingly, it should not be made a condition to my reinstatement now.

The Bb. Pilipinas-Universe crown is a prestigious title by itself and carries with it certain rights and privileges. Hindi naman po ito dapat ibigay sa kahit kanino only for “humanitarian reasons.” And regardless of whether I have a passport or not, I feel that I am capable of performing my duties and responsibilities as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe. Pilipinas-Universe.

Ever since BPCI’s pronouncement, my friends and the media have been congratulating me on my apparent reinstatement. For purposes of clarification, however, I would like to set the record straight so as not to confuse the public as to the actual state of things.

I have NOT yet been reinstated as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe. This was quite clear in the statement given by BPCI. My future reinstatement was conditioned on whether I am able to obtain a Philippine passport from the DFA. This means that if I don’t get a passport, I will NOT be reinstated. At siguro po, dapat po yata may formal letter silang dapat i-send sa akin reinstating me so that things will be clearer.

Consistent with my previous pronouncements and in the interest of our beloved country which I might be representing, I would like to request BPCI to have my name cleared of any allegation of misrepresentation. This will erase any doubt on my character when I represent our country to the Miss Universe pageant and to the international community. Since it is the intention of the BPCI to always protect me, as they claimed in their statement, I respectfully seek for BPCI to reconsider their position to include the following (1) immediately reinstating me as the rightful Bb. Pilipinas-Universe subject to no condition and clearing my name of any misrepresentation issue or any doubt in my character, (2) subsequently nullifying the declaration replacing me with the Bb. Pilipinas 2nd-runner-up, and (3) according me all the rights and privileges appurtenant to the said Bb. Pilipinas Universe title, including the right to represent our country to the Ms. Universe pageant.

I was in Camarines Sur from Sunday until Tuesday for two reasons. First, somebody sponsored my trip and I had to attend to the programs they have prepared for me and second, I wanted to gather my documents in preparation for my application for my Philippine passport. I have intended to apply even before the BPCI statement came out last Saturday. The Miss Universe Organization (of New York) contacted me last week. They asked me several questions surrounding the dethronement and I narrated everything. They told me to just go ahead and apply for a passport. And that was what I intended to do even without the April 10, 2010 BPCI statement. And while I had vowed that I will apply for a Philippine passport and adhere to the rules and regulations of BPCI with respect to my reign as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, I hope that BPCI will be kind enough to do its part by reinstating me formally without any added condition and clearing my name of any misrepresentation issue. I am ready and excited to commence the training for the Ms. Universe pageant and I would like to thank all the people who have supported me in my plight.

Beauty queen may reclaim crown -- VRLover, 13:12:12 04/11/10 Sun [1]

Beauty queen may reclaim crown
(The Philippine Star) Updated April 11, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Dethroned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj can regain her title if she can get a Philippine passport, Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) said in a statement yesterday.

“We have reassessed the situation pertaining to Miss Maria Venus Raj and have decided, for humanitarian reasons, that if she is able to obtain a valid Philippine passport, we will reinstate her as the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe,” the BPCI said.

Raj was stripped of her crown last March 29 because of citizenship issues. The BPCI executive committee said they found inconsistencies in her birth record and the information she provided during the pre-pageant interview.

“We are sensitive to her (Raj) situation, but we are aware, too, of our responsibilities, an entity existing under Philippine law... Our intention with respect to Ms. Raj was always to protect her in the way we felt appropriate,” BPCI said.

Abs-cbnnews.com yesterday reported that Raj has been informed of the BPCI decision and is consulting with her lawyers.

“I’m discussing it with my lawyers and my family. But definitely I will get a passport,” Raj said during a guest appearance on popular noontime show Wowowee.

The Filipino-Indian beauty from Camarines Sur maintained that the pageant officials were aware of the incorrect entries in her birth certificate from the beginning.

Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chief Leila de Lima had said Raj’s dethronement “deserves serious scrutiny.”

De Lima said she would like to know if BPCI gave Raj a chance to explain the inconsistencies in her birth record.

When Raj was dethroned, she also missed the opportunity to compete in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

Second runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson, a 21-year-old Broadcast Journalism major at St. Scholastica’s College, will compete in the international pageant. First runner-up Dianne Necio was disqualified from competing in the Miss Universe because she is only 17 years old. The pageant has a minimum age requirement of 18.

Close this DETHRONED BEAUTY QUEEN MARIA Venus Raj can keep her title that was taken from her less than a month after her coronation as the country’s official representative to the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

In a statement sent Saturday to the Inquirer, Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) said: “… After due deliberation, we have reassessed the situation pertaining to [Raj] and have decided, for humanitarian reasons, that if she is able to obtain a valid Philippine passport, we will reinstate her as Binibining Pilipinas-Universe.”

Albay Governor Joey Salceda, who had sought an explanation for Raj’s dethronement, was very happy and thankful to the BPCI for reconsidering their decision.

Genny Marcial, corporate affairs and PR manager of Araneta Group, the parent organization of BPCI, said Raj would have until June to present a valid Philippine passport “because the Miss Universe pageant may be held in August.”

Word of Raj’s reinstatement spread quickly on the Internet. Online fans who had rushed to her defense were overjoyed and started blogging and uploading the good news on various social networking sites.

Joyce Burton-Titular, whose blogsite www.adventuresofabeautyqueen.com has been following Raj’s story since Day 1, said: “I honestly think it’s the grace of God working through all the bloggers, forums, Facebook community, and TV and newspaper coverage.”

Burton-Titular, herself a former beauty titlist, told the Inquirer that Rafa Delfin, director of the website for pageant aficionados, www.criticalbeauty.com, had sent an appeal to the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) on Raj’s predicament.

On his Facebook fan page supporting Raj, Delfin said he forwarded the newspaper article about Venus’ humble roots to MUO president Paula Shugart, to which she replied: “After reading this article, this young woman definitely deserves her crown back.”

“They were all moved because they felt the humility and honesty of Venus. Her story of being raised on a farm, in a hut with no electricity, graduating cum laude and winning pageants is powerful. And she still goes home to that same hut today,” Burton-Titular said.

Prayers answered

On the Facebook fan page, “Petition for Venus Raj to remain as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe,” there were mixed reactions about the reinstatement. The page has nearly 4,000 fans.

“God sees the truth and hears our prayers. Cheer up Venus, smile and show the world how beautiful you are inside and out,” one of Raj’s supporters posted.

“Petitions were heard, our prayers were answered,” another fan wrote.

However, a number of bloggers and Facebook users continued to criticize the BPCI, the local franchise-holder of the Miss Universe pageant.

“I’m overjoyed that BPCI is giving Venus a chance … [But] why is obtaining a passport posed as a challenge to her? Shouldn’t they help her with it?” one fan posted.

One commented on Raj’s problem regarding her birth certificate.

“It’s the same story for many poor Filipinos applying for overseas work. When they apply for a passport, they discover discrepancies in their birth certificate,” another fan wrote.

This is usually what happens in rural areas where birth registration is entrusted to midwives, who could give the wrong information to the civil registrar.

“Such are the travails of the rural poor. But did these people commit misrepresentation? No. Were they persecuted by law? No. Their records were simply corrected,” another fan said.

Inconsistencies

The 21-year-old Raj won the Binibining-Pilipinas-Universe title last March 6. She romped away with the special awards Best in Long Gown and Best in Terno, and was voted by her fellow candidates as Miss Friendship.

But on March 29, BPCI stripped her of her title for inconsistencies in her birth records. The organization also proclaimed second runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson as her replacement.

BPCI told the Inquirer that Raj’s birth certificate stated that she was born in Bato, Camarines Sur, her father is a Catholic Filipino, and her parents are married.

However, it was learned that she was born in Doha, Qatar, her father is Indian and she was born out of wedlock.

BPCI said misrepresentation was the sole basis for stripping Raj of her title, and not citizenship or residency as in previous dethronement cases.

Raj disputed BPCI’s claims of misrepresentation. In television interviews, she said she never hid the truth. As early as November, during the screening for the pageant, she already told BPCI that she was born in Doha, Qatar, to an Indian father and a Filipino mother.

Raj said she did not have a hand in the filing of her birth certificate with the erroneous information. The inconsistency was a result of the delayed filing of her birth certificate.

Her aunt, Josephine Ramos, filed the document three years after she was born. Raj said her aunt did what she did to protect her family from embarrassment.

Raj said she only learned of the inconsistency when she was in high school and was applying for a scholarship. She added that it was poverty that prevented her from correcting her official birth records.

Prominent personalities expressed dismay—even outrage-when they learned of BPCI’s earlier decision. Among them were senator and vice presidential candidate Loren Legarda, Gabriela party-list representative and senatorial candidate Liza Maza, Commission on Human Rights Chair Leila de Lima and Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption Chair Dante Jimenez.

Raj, who graduated cum laude with a degree in Communication at Bicol University, will attempt to become the country’s third Miss Universe winner, after Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1973).

Venus Raj given chance to reclaim Bb Pilipinas-Universe title -- VRLover, 13:04:09 04/11/10 Sun [1]

MANILA, Philippines - Dethroned 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj can now reclaim her title. She only needs to get a valid Philippine passport.

In a statement released Saturday, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) announced that "for humanitarian reasons," they are allowing Raj to reclaim her title.

"We have reassessed the situation pertaining to Miss Maria Venus Raj and have decided, for humanitarian reasons, that if she is able to obtain a valid Philippine passport, we will reinstate her as the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe," the BPCI said in a statement.

Raj, who was guest at ABS-CBN's noontime game show Wowowee, said she has been informed by the BPCI about the decision.

She said she has yet to consult with her lawyers about the latest development, but admitted that she is already planning on applying for a passport.

Pero definitely, I will get a passport," Raj said.

The BPCI recently stripped Raj of her title due to inconsistencies in her birth records.

The Filipino-Indian beauty from Camarines Sur had maintained that the officials of the BPCI knew from the very beginning the incorrect entries in her birth certificate. She said she was transparent during the pre-pageant screening of candidates.

Raj had also vowed to question the BPCI's decision to dethrone her.

Commission on Human Rights chief Leila de Lima had said that Raj's case "deserves serious scrutiny."

De Lima said that she would like to find out if the BPCI gave Raj "her day" to explain the inconsistencies in her birth certificate.

The BPCI said in the statement that the decision to dethrone Raj was meant to protect the beauty titlist "in the way we felt appropriate."

It said that while the BPCI is concerned about the Raj's situation, it is also bound "as an entity" under Philippine laws.

The Bb Pilipinas-Universe has been handed to 2nd runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson.

Henson, a 21-year-old Broadcast Journalism major at St. Scholastica's College, took over Raj’s place after the pageant’s 1st runner up failed to meet the age requirement of the Miss Universe Pageant.

Courage & Commitment -- VRLovers, 13:01:02 04/11/10 Sun [1]

Dethroned beauty-pageant winner Maria Venus Raj seems to be well on her way to reclaiming her Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title.

In a statement released over the weekend by Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI), only one condition stands in the way for Venus to represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant in August: a valid passport.

The statement, which came from the office of BCPI head Stella Marquez de Araneta, reads: “We have reassessed the situation pertaining to Ms. Maria Venus Raj and have decided, for humanitarian reasons, that if she is able to obtain a valid Philippine passport, we will reinstate her as the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe.”

In the weeks since it was announced that she had been stripped of her crown and title, on account of supposed inconsistencies in her pronouncements and her documents, Venus has generously granted interviews for print, blogs and television to let the public know her sentiments, and to get the sympathy of the public to join her in her fight questioning the decision and reclaiming the title she worked so hard for.

On Facebook alone, a “Petition for Venus Raj to Remain as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2010” has already drawn more than 4,000 supporters, with many posting their protest about her dethronement issue and how Araneta and fashion designer Pitoy Moreno have been running the local pageant over the years, producing no winners on the world stage since 1979.

“I’m happy that we have won the first round, but the fight is far from over. I’d like to thank everyone who fought with me, who prayed with me, and who did not think twice to have their voices be heard. There is a long way to go until August and I’m in the process of consulting with my lawyers to make sure that we get the valid passport that they require,” Venus said in an interview, adding, “We’ll take it step by step.” Venus has become an inspiration to many, because of the courage she has shown throughout this period of confusion and heartbreak. She spoke her heart and mind and never doubted that she was fighting the “right battle.”

“It has always been a dream to become a beauty queen, and I worked so hard and prepared myself for years. When I was finally blessed with the crown last month, that dream came true. Then they stripped me of my title for reasons that I could not comprehend nor accept. So I decided to speak up and let my voice be heard. I’m glad that I am not alone in the fight, that people from all walks of life have joined me and asked for clarification and explanation. That has given me the strength and the courage. I’m glad that hope is finally within reach again. You don’t give up your dreams just like that,” she added.

Queen of Hearts

Celebrated broadcast journalist and news anchor Mel Tiangco thinks that her work in GMA Kapuso Foundation is more than just a calling. “It is a commitment,” she told us during an intimate late lunch at The Old Spaghetti House, adding, “It’s more like a labor of love because when you’re able to help others, the happiness you feel becomes priceless.”

For almost 20 years now, Mel has been devoting a big chunk of her busy work time to the foundation, joining her dedicated staff and team of volunteers in various projects that continue to help our less fortunate countrymen. “I’m almost always seen on TV bringing the news into homes, but if the opportunity permits, I join our team in medical missions, in special projects, in anything where my presence can help. I cannot describe the joy I feel every time I’m doing field work, because you never even realize that you have already made a difference in the life of someone who needs it the most,” she enthused.

Almost a million beneficiaries were served by the foundation in 2009, in areas like health, family wellness, disaster relief, education and even values formation. According to Arnel Hiloma, executive director of the foundation, people who lack opportunities and security are the foundation’s main priorities, “Through our programs, we are able to give basic necessities to the people. The projects under the health and disaster-assistance programs take into account the immediate need for gathering of resources and providing services to the marginalized, afflicted and affected in times of diseases and crisis, both natural or man-made.”

Mel added, “We’d like to help one Filipino in need at a time, changing one life at a time, giving one opportunity at a time, and hope that each life we touch becomes a catalyst of change.”

For this year, the foundation has decided on a thematic guide for each month. Last month focused on women and this month is Cancer in Children Awareness Month. “We have scheduled circumcision activities in May and our school rehabilitation projects are well under way, turning over new and newly renovated school buildings,” Mel proudly shared.

Other projects are prostate checks for men, wheelchair-giving, sight-saving activities and their regular feeding programs.

How does Mel Tiangco relax given her tight schedule? “I get a massage regularly. I guess that’s how I treat myself. And every year, our family spends time together on vacation. Life has to have balance, don’t you think so?”

She added, “But the one thing I have no calling for is politics. I have nothing against those who are so into politics, but in my own opinion, I think that you can help whoever you are, whatever profession you have. And we all know how cruel politics can be, so for me, no thank you.”

Mel Tiangco was recently feted with the CEO Excel Award by the International Association of Business Communicators.
