In that period when the wearing of stockings - and therefore suspender belts or girdles - was almost universal among women, it was quite common for them to talk about such garments among themselves and not especially unusual to do so with males present. More than once I heard "you should be glad you don't have to wear them" - a recognition, by the woman concerned, that they thought belts and girdles were not the most comfortable of garments.
You only have to look at the advertising copy of that time to see how manufacturers tried to emphasise the benefits to the female figure while playing down the elements that might cause discomfort or restriction. Most women, it seemed, sooner or later (depending on their figure and the importance to them of appearance) tended to move from lighter to firmer girdles, thereby increasing the likelihood of discomfort and sometimes leading to adverse comments about what they were wearing.
