Wearing a girdle for nine hours (as mentioned in this thread) and on a long car journey reminds me that neither was at all uncommon in the days when girdles were worn by most women. As a man, it always seemed to me that it must be somewhat uncomfortable to be firmly girdled in such circumstances but I was always reassured by my wife that it "wasn't too bad" and you "just got used to it". When I suggested that she might be more comfortable to take the girdle off before beginning a long (five-hour) car trip and put it on again just before we reached our destination she declined, saying it wasn't worth the effort of getting out of the girdle and stockings and then getting back into them again - but she jokingly added that what would be really amazing would be if girdles could have a sort of "remote control" whereby pressing a button would "switch off" the girdle to make the journey more comfortable and the switch it on again at the end of the journey.
